Je suis Charlie: quilting

Whole day there is news about what happened in Paris. I am always confused with terrorism. The victims are innocent people who left home without knowing they will be an victims within a few houres. The wrong place and wrong time .....  Their families have to deal with a lot of grieve the rest of their lives. Terrible. We have dear moslim friends. It has nothing to do with religion. Everybody has the right to believe or not to beleive and to speak.

Our youngest granddaughter Kate found her thumb!
My youngest daughter lives not far from us in Amsterdam, I go to her a few times a week to take care of little Kate for a few hours, She can smile so precious!!! It makes my day.

SewCalGal has a 2015 free motion quilting challenge. It is about improving free motion quilting skills with quilting pillows. I did the 2013 challenge and had a lot of fun and learned a lot. So I am so happy to join the 2015 challenges. This week I made the first pillowcover. A heart with a design of Luann Kessi. Every free motion quilter had to look in her wonderful  sketchbook for inspiration I draw and sew a lot of het designs already just for fun.
I am glad there is a 2015 fmq challenge. It will be so inspiring to see the pillows of all the quilters how join the challenge.

First challenge of  Januari:
I made a miniquilt inspired by a picture of Free motion at the river. Is is with parfait dyes fabric. My design was quite diffecult, so the second mini quilt is a improved version another design which is more easy to sew. It is made of anothere fat quarter of the same parfait dyeing fun. I will publish the pattern soon.\\

First attempt

Better design

The scraps  of the fiirst miniquilt were enough for an 11 inch by 11 inch block.  I had just enough fabric to sew the second mini quilt.
Iwill make more of these blocks with scraps of dyed fabric. May be it will be a rainbow quilt.

The Albert Cuyp, the famous Amsterdam streetmarket (I)

At least once a week I like to go down town Amsterdam. So I did last Saturday, the day of the Gay Parade with boats in the canals.
I love the city, having a cup of coffee on a terrace (not in a coffee shop!) and just wandering around. Most of the times it means I go to the 'Albert Cuyp' too. It is the most famous street market in Amsterdam in a very trendy neighbourhood. Many tourists know to find it!
Most tourist do not know, that there are a lot of very special shops behind the stands of the market. Some shops have the same interior for many, many years but you can buy a lot of special products.
There are a few quilt shops in Amsterdam, but when I want to buy fabrics, thread or anything else for quilting, I always go first to the shops behind the stands. Next to the Albert Cuyp is the shop where I bought my sewing machine.

In this post, I will show you some stands on the Albert Cuyp, but I will show you some special shops behind the stands in future posts.

Of course flowers ........

And herring and pickles ......

Wooden shoes in all colors for the tourists to take home!

One of my favourit fabric shops.

And  more flowers ......

Enjoy a drink or a meal.
Very cheap big pieces of good quality cotton on sale. Excellent for samplers, place mats or table runners!

Bread ....

Fabrics on stands ........

...and even more in the shops!

Trendy furniture for your terrace or garden.
Beautiful fabricsin a shop with more expensive fabrics.

The 'Bazar' a trendy oriental restaurant in an old Church.

Herbs

Sweets.

All kinds of sugars........

Insence and essential oil. No pictures said the lady!

On my way home I saw a lot of boats waiting to join the Gay Parade.
The soccer boat on the Gay Parade

Bad timing to go down town! I had to walk with my bike! Many, many people!
