Last month I read a lot about fabric dyeing in books and on the Internet. Almost all information in English. It is sometimes confusing and allthough I read a lot in English, with a new subject my vocabulary is not enough. So recipes, instructions and explanations can be very confusing.
For me there is another problem. I am a chemist. I know about chemicals and their reactions. I read some nonsense about fabric dyeing. For instance: I know there is no difference between a solution soda and soda ash with the same pH. But all authors tell me not to use soda. I like to know why. A lot of writers tell me to use ureum to dissolve dyes. But why ureum in a recipe when a color dissolves very easy? For me that is confusing. How can you trust a writer, when important information is missing.
Ik heb de afgelopen maand veel gelezen over het verven van textiel op Internet en in boeken. Bijna alles in het Engels en al die verschillende informatie is behoorlijk verwarrend. Bij de start van een nieuw onderwerp in het Engels is je woordenschat niet toereikend, maar veel recepten, voorschriften en uitleg zijn ook verwarrend en soms onjuist. Als chemicus heb ik nog een probleem als ik nonsens lees of correcte uitleg mis over waarom iets wel of juist niet mag. Met ureum lost verfpoeder beter op, maar waarom staat het in recepten bij kleuren die wel goed oplossen? En veel auteurs beweren dat je beslist geen huishoudsoda mag gebruiken. Waarom niet? Chemisch is er geen verschil tussen beide oplossingen van dezelfde pH. Hoe kun je auteurs vertrouwen als er belangrijke informatie mist?

lot. I now know I need ureum as a wetting agent and I can use soda instead of soda ash.Thanks Paula!!!!

Dharma Trading are very clear. Both websites are great to find missing information when I do not understand the information in a book or a on a website.

Alles wat je wil weten over het verven van stoffen. Een geweldige website met al die informatie die ze deelt. Nu weet ik dat met ureum de verfpoeder beter oplost en de de katoen beter nathoudt en dat dat huishoudsoda gewoon gebruikt kan worden bij het verven. Ureum gebruik ik alleen bij sundyeing en ik weeg drie keer zoveel huishoudsoda af als in recepten staat aangegeven voor soda ash.

Dharma Trading, een leverantier voor van textielverf. Beide websites bevatten de informatie die ik mis bij veel auteurs.

My first experiment with is ice dyeing. I was inspired by Wil of
Wil's Art. She had an experiment with freezing the in soda-solution soaked fabric before covering it with ice and dye. I thought why not?! I used a half yard and a fat quarter white cotton. For an art quilt I need dark fabric fabric with spots of red and yellow. I am curious how the colors of the black dye will show up and if there are yellow and red places on my fabric.

Mijn eerste experiment is met ice dyeing. Ik was geinspireerd door Wil van Wil's Art. Zij experimenteerde met het bevriezen van de in soda geweekte textiel voor ze er ijs en verf op legt. Ik dacht, "Waarom niet?". Ik heb een halve meter en een fat quarter witte katoen genomen en op het ijs zwarte, rode en wat gele poeder gestrooid. Het moeilijkste vind ik 24 uur wachten!! Ik ben benieuwd hoe de kleuren van de zwarte verf zich gedragen en of ik inderdaad gele en rode plekken krijg.

And tenslotte ook parfait verven geprobeerd. Met te geconcentreerde verfoplossingen, maar hoewel de lappen donker zijn, vind ik ze toch mooi.

I really love my pile with dyed fabric. My granddaughter can not wait till she gets the left overs to play with. But I learned that I need a plan and recipes before I start to dye (As I always did as a chemist!) and I need to calculate more secure the amounts of dye I need. But the two peaces for my art quilt are just what I intended to dye.
Ik vind mijn eerste geverfde lappen mooi. Ik moet er snel wat van maken. Mijn kleindochter kan bijna niet wachten. Zij will spelen met de restlapjes.
Wat ik wel geleerd heb, is dat ik een plan moet hebben en recepten voor ik begin. De benodigde hoeveelheden moet ik ook beter berekenen. Maar de twee stukken voor mijn art quilt zijn precies zoals ik ze wilden hebben.
