A bathroom again but no coffeebeans!

After three weeks of dust we have a toilet again! We hope that wednesday everything is finished. Just before my birthday. We need still to to buy some accesories and we wait for shelfs in a alcove, but we can take a shower at home again. Hurray!!!! We had a lot of luck with the craftsman, They were all very skilled, helpfull.and friendly.

Na drie weken hebben we een badkamer en toilet! We moeten nog wat accesoires kopen en wachten nog een paar weken op planken voor in een nis en onder de wasbakken. Maar we kunnen weer thuis douchen. Hoera!!!! We hebben zo'n geluk gehad met de vaklui. Ze waren goed in hun werk, behulpzaam en vriendelijk.

I gave my daughter the VW-van play quilt. My daughter and grandson keep the gender of the baby a sercret. But when you order a VW-van wall quilt and a VW van play quilt, I cannot help thinking my next grandchild will be a boy too!!! My daughter dislikes quilting on a quilttop. So I did stitching in the ditch around parts of the van and the zebra crossing, but the white surfaces were too big to leave it without quilting. Thats why I stitched some traffic signs in stead of quilting.

This week I will make another VW van play quilt for a friend who will be the proud father of a sun soon. Than I will quilt the quilt with meandering and small traffic signs.

I heb mijn dochter de VW-van play quilt gegeven. Zij en haar man willen niet zeggen of hun kind een jongen of meisje wordt. Maar als je een VW-bus-wandkleed en VW-bus-boxkleed vraagt, dan denk ik dat we er nog een kleinzoon bijkrijgen. Mijn dochter wil niet dat een quilt gequilt wordt!!! Daarom heb ik langs de apllicaties van de bussen en zabrapad gestikt. De witte vlakken zijn te groot om niet te quilt, dus heb ik er verkeersborden in gestikt.
 Ik ga van de week nog een VW-bus boxkleed maken voor een goede vriend die ook snel een zoon krijgt. Dan ga ik wel quilten. Meanderen met kleine verkeersborden.

Waiting for the baby

 I had tried another sampler with fmq just for fun. I will make four coffee placemats with fmq. I have been busy for hours to sew some coffeebeans and had major tension issues. I had to bring my sewing machine back to the shop. Problem is, they will fix it in more than two weeks!!!!! I must borrow my old sewing machine from my daughter. Two weeks without my machine is impossible.

 Ik heb nog geprobeerd een proeflap te maken, gewoon voor de lol. Ik wilde zo vier koffie-placemats maken. Ik ben uren bezig geweest om wat koffiebonen te naaien, maar het lukte niet met mijn machine. Ik heb van alles geprobeerd, maar het lukte niet om gewoon te stikken. Als ik de machine terugbreng naar de winkel duurt het meer dan twee weken voor ik de machine terugkrijg!!!! Dan mijn mijn oude machine van mijn dochter even terugvragen. Twee weken zonder naaimachine kan niet!!

But the back shows major tension isseus! It costs me hours and all for nothing. But I did not like the design after all on this black cotton.

It is better not to sew for a few days. I had to start  cleaning the house with all the dust of the renovation. At first I tried to clean up every day, but that was depressing. I think one day 'making me angry' (a Dutch expression) will be enough to finish the job: a clean, tidy home with no dust on the shells! Than I had to prepare for my birthday. I will have a party for the first time in years.
When my machine is back, I am thinking of a 30 x 30 inch whole cloth with graffitty quilting. Big letters in the middle. That will be fun.

Het is ook beter even niet te naaien. Het huis moet nog worden schoongemaakt en opgeruimd na de verbuwing. In het begin van de verbouwing ruimde ik elke dag op, maar dat was een hopeloze zaak. Ik denk dat als ik me een dag flink kwaad maak, alle rommel opgeruimd is en alles in huis stofvrij, opgeruimd en schoon.
Als mijn machine terug is, wil ik gaan een whole cloth quilten van 70 x 70 cm. Grote graffitti letters in het midden. Daar zal ik veel plezier mee hebben.

The dealer for my Husqvarna Sapphire 875Q sewing  machine. They have now  three shops full with sewing machines.
Every time I visit this store, there is someone buying a sewing mahine!

Renovating the bathroom/De badkamer verbouwen

Past week two very hard working experts had been busy renovating the bathroom. We hired a Dutch company, but the men working at our bathroom are Victor from Russia and Pavel from Latvia.Very skilled and very friendly. They love my coffee and home made cake and cookies. I can laugh with Victor, who speaks Dutch and English as well, and Pavel is always looking worried about my wishes and explains what is possible and what is not possible. Almost everything is possible.  They clean up every evening and return every morning very early. But there is a lot of dust in the house. So I have to dust every day. Buying and deciding all the sanitair costs a lot of time. There is always unexpted decissions to make. I had to buy everything on the Internet!!! But I am happy to go to the showroom in Amsterdam, where skilled men advise me before ordering.

De hele week zijn we bezig geweest met de renovatie van onze badkamer. Hoewel we met een Nederlands bedrijf werken, doen Victor uit Rusland en Pavel uit Letland het werk. Ze werken goed, zorgvuldig en netjes. Elke avond ruimen ze op en 's ochtends vroeg bellen ze weer aan. Met Victor, die Nederlands en Engels spreekt,  kan ik grappen maken en Pavel heeft altijd een zorgelijke trek bij elk voorstel of wens. Hij legt altijd uit wat wel of niet kan en lijkt me heel redelijk. Maar uiteindelijk komt hij met voorstellen, zodat bijna alles kan wat we willen. Maar wat gaat er een tijd zitten in iedere keer het huis stofvrij maken. Ook het kopen van het sanitair kost tijd. Er zijn zoveel dingen waaraan je moet denken. Ook dit koop je tegenwoordig op Internet, maar gelukkig is er een showroom in Amsterdam, waar ik uitstekend geholpen wordt voor ik de spullen bestel.

The shower! In twoo weeks I can take a shower.

Together with my granddaughter I discovered swimming again, but only in warm water! I always thought there was only cold water in the swimming pools! I hate jumping in cold water! But I love the warm water pool and I intend to swim every week a few times. The swimming pool is almost next door! It is a very old, but next to it, they are building a new beautiful swimming pool. On the walls in the old swimming pool are funny paintings. It make me think of new quilt projects with funny elephants and caterpillars.

Met mijn kleindochter heb ik het zwemmen weer ontdekt, maar nu in warm water! Ik dacht dat al het water in zwembaden nog altijd koud was! Ik ga nu in de strijd tegen de kilootjes elke week een paar keer zwemmen, heerlijk! Het zwembad vlakbij ons is oud, maar ernaast verschijnt al een prachtig nieuw bad. In het oude bad staan op de muur allemaal grappige tekeningen van bijvoorbeeld een olifant of duizendpoot. Ik moet daarbij steeds aan nieuwe quiltprojecten denken.


Dieting is difficult with friends from Maroc, Iran and Irak. My husband helps some students from university better understanding , better speaking and writing  Dutch. Sometimes they have diner with us and sometimes they cook for us. This weekend we went to Simo from Maroc. He and his Dutch girlfriend cooked delicious tajine withquince fruit for us and they made a delicious cheese cake with orange blossom water.
Hodda from Iran and het Iraqui husband eated with us. We cooked a Indonesian rice table for them. There are a lot of Durch peaple with roos in Indonesia, that's why Indonisian food is popular in The Netherlands. And of course it is delicious.
I swimmed three times last week and keep me diet, but I lost  no weight! Have to try it again this week.

De strijd tegen de kilo's is moeilijk met vrienden die uit Marokko, Irak en Iran komen. Mijn man helpt oudere, integrerende studenten met Nederlands voor hun studie en scripties. Zij komen af en toe bij ons eten of wij eten bij hen. Dit weekend hebben we bij Simo uit Marokko en zijn Neerlandse vriending heerlijk Marokaans gegeten. Hodda en Saïd uit Iran en Iraq hebben bij ons Indonesisch gegeten. Het hele effect van een week lijnen en zwemmen is weg!

I had to little  time to sew this week, but I have made two mini quilts of the bonus-fabric I dyed at the workshop of Will Opio Oguto. The inspiration of the design is an art quilt made by Will too. Follow the link and you will see this beautiful quilt/ I had just enough fabric for the tops and binding. The back is a green shade cotton, also dyed at the workshop. I used red and green thread for the quilting.
My husband said that the quilts are my first ''art guilts'. How sweet he can be!!!!

Ik had weinig tijd om te naaien deze week, maar ik heb toch deze twee miniquilts gemaakt van mijn geverfde lap op de workshop van  Will Opio Oguto. De inspiratie van het design van the miniquilts zijn ook van Wil. Volg de link en je ziet haar prachtige vogelquilt. De lap was net groot genoeg voor de top en de bies, de achterkant is lap in een lichtgroene kleur, ook van de workshop. Ik heb rood en groen garen gebruikt voor het quilten.
Mijn man merkte op dat hij deze twee quiltjes meer 'kunstwerken' vond. Wat kan hij soms lief zijn!!!!

Next week I like to sew a little bit more. I make a play quilt with four small VW-busses My daughter wants them in the same color as het wall quilt VW-bus. I have really soft woolen batting. I bought it in this excellent quiltshop: Mariana's quiltcorner.

Volgende week ga ik een boxkleed maken voor de baby van mijn dochter die over een maand geboren wordt. Vier VW-bussen erop in dezelfde kleur als haar VW-bus-wandkleed. Ik heb nog heerlijk wollen tussenvulling, gekocht in Marina's quiltcorner in Bilthoven.

A new project with VW-busses: a playmat for my pregnant daughter.

I want to make a 38 x 24 inch sampler with graffitty patterns. Just to practice new patterns.  I will use beautiful multicolored Superior thread. I need to draw a lot in my sketchbook too. Some patterns are easy to sew, but for some I need to 'train' my eye hand coordination. Of course I will try some wonderful patterns of my color book for adults.

Ik ga een 60 x 80 cm proeflap quilten met graffitty patronen. Daarvoor moet ik veel tekenen, omdat niet alle patronen even makkelijk voor me zijn. Voor veel patronen moet ik mijn oog-hand-coordinatie trainen. Natuurlijk haal ik veel patroontjes uit mijn kleurboek voor volwassenen.

All these fat quarters for 1 euro each!

Some multicolor metal thraed!

I prefer shopping for my quilting and sewing in shops and markets. There was a excellent quiltshp with so friendly owners 10 minutes biking away from my house, but it closed a year ago. In Amsterdam are two quilt shops left, where I can buy almost anythin. The Birdblocks  and of course I can go to the famous Albert Cuyo streetmarket. But my whole live I shopped for haberdashery in a small very old shop in Hilversum, a place in the neighbourhood where a lived almost my whole live. When I visit my daughter who lives in Hilversum, we almost go every time to that shop in a very old buuilding. We have shopped for the last time there. It is closed too. For the last time, my daughter found some beautiful soft color fat quaters for me and I bought some thread for graffitty.

I had to shop on the Internet more and more. I understand that more and more shops close, but shopping is less and less fun.

Ik koop mijn naaispulletjes graag in winkels of op de Albert Cuyp. Helaas gaat het fourniturenwinkeltje in het centrum van Hilversum dicht. Het was in rommelwinkeltje in een kaal pand, maar oh zo gezellig en ze hadden van alles. Zo jammer ik kocht er al spulletjes toen de kinderen klein waren. Dat heerlijke quiltwinkeltje de Bricoleur in Tuindorp Oostzaan is ook al dicht! Het is handig om van alles op Internet te kopen, maar het winkelen wordt niet gezelliger.
Mijn dochter heeft nog wat leuke fat quarters voor me uitgezocht en samen met het metallic garen was dat mijn laatste aankoop.

My eldest daughter is a teacher at a school for mentaly disabled children. She is very busy with less spare time. So Wednesday on her free day I went with my granddoughter to the swimmingpool, so my daughterr had some time to spent as she likes. I hate swimming but I was the activity my granddaughter want the most. We went to the shop to buy a swimmingsuit and of course it had to be a pink one! We went to a small swimmingpool and we were the only swimmers! I loved to swim again with my granddaughter and she was so sweet and happy in the swimmingpool. A lot of joy for both of us. I have always been a working mom and  was not longing for grandchildren. But now I have grandchildren, I am surprised it is such a joy to play with them! I feeled the baby in the stomach of my youngest daughter and I had already the same feeling.  I can not wait till it is born. Het VW-babywall hanging is finished.

Omdat mijn dochter die op een school met minderbegaafde leerlingen werkt, het ontzettend druk heeft, ben ik woensdagmiddag met mijn kleindochter naar het zwembad geweest. Heeft mijn dochter  een middagje voor zichzelf. Eerst zijn we naar de winkel gegaan om een badpak te kopen. Mijn kleindochter koos natuurlijk een rose badpak voor me uit! Ik heb in 30 jaar niet gezwommen en eerlijk gezegd vond ik tot woensdag zwemmen vreselijk, maar wat hebben we genoten allebei! Het zei me niets oma zijn toen ik nog werkte, ik wilde geen oppasoma worden. Wat zat ik ernaast, ik geniet ervan. Van de week voelde ik de kleine bewegen in de buik van mijn andere dochter. Ik kan niet wachten tot dat kleintje er is!  

I had a class fabric dyeing. The teacher is an talented art quilter: Wil Opio Oguta. You must visit her site to see her beautiful art quilts. She dyes all het fabrics! I have a lot of colored fat quarters: rainbow colors and shades of green. The piece of cotton colored with the left over dye solution is so beautiful! Next weekend I plan to dye myself. I will certainly have more classes, Wil can teach me a lot.

Ik heb een geweldige workshop textielverven gehad van Wil Opio Oguta, die zelf prachtige art quilts maakt en daarvoor al haar textiel verft. Ik heb nu een stapel gekleurde fat quarters.: regenboog kleuren en tinten groen. Het stuk katoen dat geverfd is met de restjes veerfoplossing is het mooiste geworden! Volgende week ga ik zelf verven en ik ga zeker meer cursussen volgen bij Wil. Ze kan me veel leren.

Ik ben er ook nog in geslaagd deze week te quilten. Twee samplers met graffitty en de VW-bus wandquilt is af. Van de week nog hangt deze aan de muur in de babykamer bij mijn dochter.

Just some ironing and than the VW-bus is ready for the wall of another grandchild. My daughter did not want me to quilt it.

This container is standing in front of our home. The renovation of the bathroom and toilet started this week. A lot of dust in the house and I could not find my make up anywhere. Untill I decided to put the laundry in the machine. Hurray, of course on the washing machine!! I have some color on my face again!

Deze container staat voor ons huis. Dat betekent dat de verbouwing van de badkamer en toilet is begonnen. Veel stof in huis en ik kon mijn make up nergens vinden. Toen ik de was in de wasmachine stopte vond ik het terug. Natuurlijk op wasmachine! Ik kan nu weer naar buiten met wat kleur op mijn gezicht.

Port and cheese at a late summer evening

We had a lovely present from a friend: a bottle of  Port and some delicious French and Dutch cheeses. To much for two, so we asked our neighbours to enjoy a cheese and port meal with us. So we sat on our terrace in the late evening sun and eat and talked outside untill eleven oçlock!!! I cannot remember sitting and eating outsite in autumn. I think it will be the last day this summer!  It is so nice to live in a neighbourhood with such nice neightbours. The very same day another neighbour brought us a cake.

We hebben van een vriend een plateau met heerlijke kazen en een fles port gekregen. Teveel voor twee, daarom hebben we de buren gevraagd om de kaas en port samen met ons soldaat te maken. Dat hebben we buiten op het terras gedaan en we hebben tot elf uur buiten gezeten. Het is waarschijnlijke de laatste avond dat dat kon dit jaar. Het is heerlijk om in een buurt met aardige buren te wonen. We kregen van een andere buurvrouw trouwens een cake dit weekend!

We intend to go on a diet after this meal!

We have been baby sitting all our four grandchildren this week. Tuesday en Wednesday we had to take care of grandchildren too. Lucky we!! But it is again few time for sewing.

We hebben op alle kleinkinderen gepast deze week. Komende dinsdag en woensdag passen we ook weer op. We vinden dat een buitenkansje, maar het betekent weinig tijd om te naaien.

14 inch x 10 inch samplers.

I finished two samplers with fmq graffity/doodling. One with half fmq patterns and another one with almost none. No feathers, paisleys and that kind of patterns. I used a multi color brildor embroidery yarn on black cotton. When I sew the samplers I see a lot of mistakes, but after finishing and when not looking to stitches but to the whole sampler I love the colors and all different patterns. I haven't not decide if the binding black or sam other fabric. Have to think about that.

Ik heb twee proeflappen met fmq graffity/doodling genaaid. Op de ene nog veel fmqpatronen, maar op de andere niet. Geen veren of paisleys. Ik heb multikluren borduurgaren van brildor gebruikt. Als ik de patronen naai, dan zie ik al die foutjes die ik maak, maar nu het af is, valt het resultaat mee. Alleen moet ik nog beslissen hoe ik de lappen afbies, Zwart of een ander patroon. Moet ik nog even over nadenken.

I find this patterns very nice for fmq, So I think that my two sandwiched samplers wil be filled with this patterns. So that is fun for in the evening. But I love this kind of more graffitty style fmq of the next picture too. It need a bigger sampler than a placemat and I need more marking. But more freedom and fantasy!. After the workshop 'cotton dyeing' next saturday, I will have a nice piece of colored cotton for this fun!

Ik vind deze patronen zo leuk, dat ik mijn twee andere samplers die klaar liggen voor fmq er voor ga gebruiken. Maar onderstaand, meer graffity-achtig patroon is ook leuk om te doen. Ik heb er een grotere proeflap voor nodig, dan de placemats die ik klaar heb liggen. Zaterdag ga ik naar de katoenverven workshop en een van de lappen die ik daar ga verven, ga ik voor dit patroon gebruiken.

Baby wall quilt

De VW is appliqued on the top of the babt wall quilt for my daughter. Only de VW-logo had to be done. She had to decide which fabric I will use for the binding. Hope she likes it!

De bus is ook vastgezet op de top van de baby quilt voor mijn dochter. Het VW-logo nog en dan afbiezen. Zij mag kiezen welke van de stofjes ik zal gebruiken. Hoop dat me dochter het mooi vindt!








The Aiming for Accuracy Quilt along quilt is still waiting to be finished. Too busy.
De aiming-for-accuracy quilt moet nog even wachten. Te druk!

Free pattern: Giraffe baby quilt with bells in horns and rustling ears.

Giraf boxkleed met rinkelende hoorns en knisperende oren.

This quilt is not my idea. I found a picture at about com. It is from Bonnie Sneed. I made the pattern and add bells in the horns and rustle plastic in the soft, flappy ears.


Het ontwerp is van Bonnie Sneed. Ik heb er bellen in de hoorns en knisperende oren aan toegevoegd.

Finished size 32" x 40"       80cm/100 cm

Time to sew: 4-6 hour.       Tijd: 4-6 uur

The quilt is a applique giraffe with flappy inner ears, flappy horns and hair between the horns. A small sashing of 1 inch, a 4 inch border with corners.

Het quilt is een geappliceerde giraf met knisperende binnenoren en hoorns met een belletje erin.

Ingredients:
Back: 1 yard blue fleece

Blue: 25 inch

Giraf print: fat quarter

Pantherprint: 0,25 yard

Monkey print: fat quarter

Scraps: soft white for ears and horns, black cotton for eyes, sand colored for snout.

Some threads for 'hair'

Two small, round metal bells and some rustle plastic 

Instructions: 

Cut the fabrics

Blue:  one piece 22,5  x 30,5 and four pieces 4,5" square

Panter print: sashing  

• two pieces 22,5" x 1,5",
• two pieces 40" x 1,5",
• four pieces 4,5" x 1,5",

                     binding:  4,3 yard (1,5 or 2 inch width)

Monkey print: 2 pieces 4,5" x 22,5 "

                        2 pieces 4,5" x 30,5 "

Top:

2. Sew the 22,5" sashing strips to the top and bottom of the blue fabric block.

3. Sew the 22,5" border to top and bottom of the top.
4. Sew 40" sashing strips to the long sides of the top.
5. Sew 4,5" width border (blue square - 4,5" sashing strip - 30,5 " monkey strip -  4,5" sashing strip - blue square. (2x)
6. Sew the borders to the long sides of the top.

Applique
7. Print out the giraffe picture and enlarge with a photo copier or draw a giraffe
    on paper.
    Your giraffe is big enough when the ears are partly on the monkey border.
    Height with horns about 32", 26" width.

8. Cut out the pieces of the giraffe, both white inner ears two times and horn
    four times.

5. Sew withe ears together and turn. Fill with a some rustle plastic. 

6. Sew horns, turn and fill with batting and a small metal bell.

7. Pin all parts of the giraffe on the top.
    The horns, hair and ears 1/4 inch under the hat.

8. Use a satin stitch or zigzag (width 3) to sew the parts on the top. Use for the
    eyes black  thread and give the eyes a twinkle with  some white stitches.
    Do not applique the horns and white ears. They are fixed to the top when you
    stitch the hat on the top. 
9. Sew the mouth, nose and stripes on the snouth with a satin or zigzag stitch     
    (wdth 2)

9. Sandwich your guilt, quilt it and bind it.

Back: 1 yard blue fleece

Blue: 25 inch

Giraf print: fat quarter

Pantherprint: 0,25 yard

Monkey print: fat quarter

Scraps soft white fabric for ears and horns and scraps of black cotton for eyes, scrap of sand colored cotton for mouth)

Some threads for 'hair'

Two small, round metal bells and some rustle plastic

1. Snijden van stoffen

Blauw: rechthoek 22.5 inch x 30,5 inch en vier blokken 4,5 inch x 4,5 inch

Panter print: stroken 1.5 inch

• 2 x 22,5 inch
• 2 x 40 inch
• 4x 4,5 inch
• 150 inch (1,5 of 2 inch breed) voor de rand.

Apen print: 2 stroken 4,5 inch x 22,5 inch

2 strokes 4,5 inch x 30,5 inch

2. Naai de top.

   -  Naai eerst panter stroken en apen stroken van 22,5 inch langs de lange kant
      aan elkaar. (2x)
   -  Naai deze met de stroken aan de kortaan de korte zijde van de blauwe 
      rechthoek.
   -  Naai de panterstrook van 40 inch aan de lange zijde van de top. (2x)
   -  Naai 4,5 inch brede stroken aan elkaar in de volgorde: blauw, panter, apen,
      panter, blauw. (2x))
   -  Naai de  de verkregen strook langs de lange zijde van de top. (2x)

3. Print de giraf uit en vergroot de print met het kopieerapparaat of teken de
    giraf na op de gewenste grootte  (ongeveer 32 inch lang en 26 inch breed)
    De oren vallen gedeeltelijk op de rand.

4. Knip de delen van de giraf uit. 

5. Leg patroondeeltjes op de stof en knip uit. 
    Knip de witte oren en hoorns dubbel. 
    Knip de snuit ook eenmaal uit de tussenvulling.
    Let op knip toeslag: oren en  hoorns 0,5 inch aan zijde die aan het hoofd komt,
    hoofd 0,5 inch toeslag aan zijde die onder de snuit komt, nek 0,5 inch toeslag
    aan boven en onderkant.

5. Naai de twee delen van de witte oren op elkaar, keer ze en vul met wat 
    knisper plastic. Oren moeten plat blijven.

6. Naai de twee delen van de hoorns op elkaar en keer ze. Doe wat tussenvulling
    om de belletjes stop dit in de oren en vul de hoorns verder op.

7. Speld de delen van de giraf op de top. Oren, nek, hoorns, haar en ogen 0,5
    inch onder de kop, kop 0,5 inch onder de snuit, nek 0,5 inch onder de snuit en
    over de panter rand.
    Leg onder de snuit de snuit van vulling.

8. Torn de naad tussen panter rand en blauwe rechthoek los op de plaats van de |   nek en naai de rand met de nek er tussen weer aan het vierkant vast. 
9. Gebruik een satijn- of zigzagsteek (steekbreedte 3) om de kop op de top te
    appliceren. Gebruik voor de ogen zwart draad en steekbreedte 2.
    De witte oren en hoorns worden vast gestikt met het appliceren van de kop.

10. Naai neus, lippen en streep in de snuit met een satijn of zigzagsteek.
      Steekbreedte 2    

11. Sandwich de top en back met de tussen vulling.
12. Naai zo dicht mogelijk langs de giraf met een rachte steek de sandwich door.
      (zo komt de giraf mooi vlak te liggen)
13. Quilt met een meandermotief de sandwich door. Quilt om de applicatie heen.

Tutorial: Mug rugs and place mats with hyperquilted flower

Tutorial challenge #1: Hyper quilted mug jug



Hyperquilting is fun to do en gives beautifull  effects like this hyper quilted flower in three colours.
Instead of sewing samplers I like to sew gifts for family and friends like these place mats and mug jugs. I few days after sewing they were already on the breakfast table of a dear friend. A present for her birthday.

Finished size: 5 inch square

You need scraps of white cotton, batting or flannel, scraps for the binding and thread in matching colors. I use 40 wt polyester (Brildor) but cotton or rayon embroidery thread gives beautiful flowers to.

1. Cut the cotton and batting.

It is easier to move a bigger square round the needle, so it is better to quilt your mug rugs in one piece. So I cut a 6 inch square for one,  a 12 inch x 6 inch piece for two and a 12 inch square for four mug jugs. slightly smaller.

 

2. Cut 1,5 inch strips for the binding and find thread in matching colors.

3. Make a sandwich with pins, mark 6 inch squares and the middle of each square.

4. Practice the pattern of the flower on paper.  Start in the center with a spiral and draw petals around the spiral. The size and form of petals may slighty differ. Do the same with each color and finish with filling the center spiral with yellow circles.

5. Stitch your flower in the same order as drawn in the picture.
When you do not have problems with the tension of your thread you can use white thread in the bobbin. Otherwise you need the match the color in the bobbin.
Snap your threads when you start and end with a color. Because of the heavy stitching in the center of the flower you can snap your threads without bury them with a knot.
6. Free motion quilt around the flower a filler with a white thread. For the mug jug you need micro quilting. I used for the two mug jugs two different fillers: pebbling and echoing of the flowers.
If you  have no experience with the filler, practice the pattern on paper.
Tip: Pebbling looks better if you stitch every circle twice or thrice

7. Cut the sandwich in 5 x 5 inch square mug jugs.

 8. Finish your mug rug with the binding.

A baby quilt with pattern

I visited this year with my grandchildren the Dick Bruna House in Utrecht,The Netherlands, several times. Dick Bruna is the author of the Miffy books

In the Dick Bruna House is a game. Children need to give the little girls the balloon that matches the dress.

I decided to make a babyquilt of the game and this weekend I finished two babyquilts. One for my husbands son and his wife (they get a baby in November, and one for a dear friend who has a little baby girl.

The white balloons are made of flannel, so the coloured balloons stick to the white balloons. (The principle of a design wall.) The dresses are applique.

It is easy to change a girl in a boy: cut out a corner from the dress to cange it in trousers and a t-shirt.

The quilting is stippling. 

It was not difficult to keep the quilting pattern consistent in the little squares of the big '365 days in 6 weeks quilt', but I did not succeed to keep my stipling consistent in this baby quilt. In the second baby quilt with a different quilting pattern, the quilting is more consistent. Below some pics. I did not quilt the dresses and the balloons.

Here is a link to the pattern of the quilt with the templates of the girls and balloons in real size.  The pattern is in Dutch. Therefore below a description on how I sewed my quilt.

You need 1/4 yard white flannel, 1 yard white cotton and 1 yard colored cotton (red, green, orange, yellow of blue). 1/4 yard or scraps of the other four colors. 1 yard basting.

1. Cut white cotton top, coloured back and basting (Finished seize quilt is: 40 inch x 32 inch.
   Cut 6 white flannel balloons
   Cut 12 colored balloons and 6 dresses of colored cotton
   For the binding: cut 10 strokes (44 inch x 1,5 inch) two of each color cotton
2. Paint the drawing on the top.
3. Pin or spray the top on the basting.
4. Stitch the white flannel balloons and dresses on the quilt with a black satin stitch.
5. Complete all the lines on the drawing with a satin stich. (Bruna pictures have always black lines.)
6. Spray baste the back on the basting and machine quilt the sandwich. Do not quilt the balloons and dresses.
7. Sew the long sides of the colored strokes together (see picture pattern). Cut the piece in two pieces of 22 inch and sew the long sides of the pieces together. Press the seams and cut the piece in strokes of 2 inch for the binding.
8. Finish the quilt with the binding
