Machinequilten FMQ 2: Wat is absoluut nodig voor machine quilten?

Toen ik een half jaar terug begon met free motion quilten, schrok ik van wat er allemaal nodig was volgens de vele experts op Internet. Ook op een workshop met met drang allerlei hulpmiddelen aangeraden, die daar te duur konden worden aangeschaft. Quiltspullen zijn niet goedkoop.
Ik krijg altijd wantrouwen als ik zie dat degenen die hulpmiddelen aanraden  deze zelf verkopen. Voor mij is het dan een sport om te ondervinden wat echt nodig is en wat niet. Voor ik dure dingen aanschaf voor een hobby, wil ik wel weten of het een hobby blijft.

Ik kan tot nu toe prima machine quilten met alleen mijn eenvoudige naaimachine en een universeel meandervoetje. Alleen dit voetje heb ik extra aangeschaft. Zo quiltte ik een king size quilt, wandquilts, tafellopers, poppenquilts, boxkleden, placemats en kaarten om te versturen.

Deze wholeclothe (1m x 1 m) heb ik gequild met mijn Husqvarna. Ik heb geen andere hulpmiddelen gebruikt dan mijn meandervoetje.

Ook deze King Size quilt met 425 verschillende patronen is in vijf stroken van een halve meter breed en 2,5 m lang gequild zonder quilttafel of andere hulpmiddelen.

Wat je dus absoluut nodig hebt om te quillten zijn: 

1.  Een naaimachine die een rechte steek kan stikken!
Er zijn quiltsters die op een oude Singer naaimachine prachtig quilten en er zijn quiltsters die op een dure Bernina met een steeklengteregelaar net zo prachtig quilten.
Zelf quilt ik op mijn Husqvarna Emerald 183. Een eenvoudige machine, waarmee ik wel de snelheid aan kan passen. Dat regelen van de snelheid is met mijn machine erg handig, want met de pedaal is het met mijn machine heel langzaam of veel te snel.
Handig is ook dat ik kan instellen dat als ik stop met naaien de naald in mijn werk steekt. Zo zal het werk bij het herschikken van mijn sandwich of het verplaatsen van mijn handen niet verschuiven en daarmee een grote lelijke steek maken.

2. Een meander/borduurvoet.(darningvoet)

Als de naald in het werk wordt gestoken, drukt dit voetje op de sandwich. Als de naald omhoog gaat, gaat ook het voetje omhooog en kan de sandwich verschoven worden. Je zou zonder voetje kunnen free motion quilten, maar dan zijn je vingers niet beschermd tegen de naald!
Het voetje kan erg piepen. Zodra ik dat hoor, doe ik  een druppel naaimachine-olie op een doekje en ga daarmee over de veer en de pen.

Op Internet zijn goede universeelvoetjes te krijgen als alternatief voor de soms dure merkvoetjes. Ik kocht dit voetje voor 15 euro. Het voetje bevalt me tot nu toe prima. Mocht je af en toe spullen in Amerika bestellen: daar verkopen ze deze voetjes voor 7-8 dollar!


Ik weet nu welke hulpmiddelen ik graag zou willen gebruiken en waarom. De meeste spullen zijn duur en op internet heb ik alternatieven gevonden voor de vaak veel te dure producten. Ideeën bedacht en vaak zelf gemaakt door andere quiltsters op Internet. In een volgend bericht vertel ik hierover.

A long list, but just two place mats

I have been busy with nothing this week. I do not know how, but time past by very quick and I did very little with it It wasmy first week with a WIP/BOM list and I wanted to do a lot, but I think I need more than a list to keep busy!

One day was well spent: I went to the Zoo with my granddaughter Salijn. She enjoyed being there and I enjoyed watching my granddaughter!
I made two soft doll quilts for her, but forget to make a picture! 



My finished objects are:
- two secret objects: the centre bloc for a Round Robbin swatch and a postcard for a postcard swap. Pictures of the centerblock I will post later. .

- Three doll quilts, one for the granddaughter of a friend and two for my granddaughter.
- two place mats for a dear friend who celebrates her birthday tonight.No feathers on these place mats. I wanted place mats for a breakfast or lunch in the summer! I hyper quilted flowers with leaves.
It is still difficult for me to keep the stippling consistent! Had to practice stippling more.

So I do need to deal with WIP's and BOM's for next week:

1. Posting the Giraffe pattern.
2. Yellow inchies for a swap.
3. I already pieced the top of two ladders and snakes play quilts for my granddaughters. I want to applique the snakes, ladders and numbers. Also two big dices. The play quilts must be ready before their birthdays in Augustus and September.
4. Two more red place mats for my daughter in law. So I can give it to her the next time we go to see them.
5. The fabrics for two more Balloon baby quilts are cut weeks ago. This week one finish. The one I will give to my youngest daughter when she finally can tell me she is pregnant. 
6. Finish the picnic quilt (wedding rings) for my eldest daughter. The mother of my granddaughter. 
7. I started a blog for free motion quilting in Dutch. I want to upload at least two posts next week.

Machinequilten (FMQ) 1: Free motion quilten op de naaimachine

Waarom naaimachine quilten en waarom deze serie berichten?

Ik kijk met bewondering naar mensen die met de hand een quilt doorquilten en daar enthousiast over kunnen zijn. Het quilten met de hand geeft prachtige quilts, maar ik heb er het geduld niet voor.
Het quilten met de machine ziet er anders maar ook prachtig uit, maar degenen die mijn quilts krijgen weten niet eens wat quilten is, laat staan dat ze het verschil zien!
De reden waarom ik graag quilt op de machine is denk ik dezelfde als waarom handquilters graag quilten. Heerlijk geconcentreerd bezig zijn met je handen em daarbij praten met anderen of heerlijk met je gedachten wegdromen. Overdag zit mijn man vaak met zijn computer aan de andere hoek van onze lange tafel! Ik geniet van zijn gezelschap maar ook van de patronen die ik naai met vooral het free motion quilten. Ik hou van het geluid van de naaimachine bij het quilten en de rust die het me geeft. Ik krabbelde altijd op papier, nu krabbel ik op textiel.

Na heel veel uren oefenen: mijn eerste whole cloth: free motion quilten met micropatronen en hyperquilten (35x40 inch). Het begon met de gehyperquilte verenhart in het midden. Daarna kwam het microquilten daaromheen. Alleen de vorm het hart was getekend,, de rest ontstond al naaiend.
Uren plezier achter de naaimachine met mooie kleuren garen. En, zoals u aan het detail op de achtergrond van dit blog kan zien, de steekjes zien er aardig uit!

Ik heb veel informatie verzameld op veel Engelstalige websites en kennis gemaakt met geweldige artiesten en hun technieken en kom er steeds meer tegen! Zij maken prachtige quilts met technieken die iets toevoegen aan het machinequilten. Vaak grenzen de technieken aan borduren of threadpainting. Ik heb veel geleerd en leer nog steeds bij door nog meer te surfen op Internet, tutorials uit te voeren, online lessen te volgen, blogs te lezen en vele fimpjes te bekijken en te shoppen bij andere kunstvormen voor inspiratie.
Ik heb inmiddels een serie boeken en oefen veel. Ik heb op Pinterest veel patronen en voorbeelden verzameld en teken en krabbel veel patronen bij het tv kijken of op andere 'verloren momenten'.
Ik heb veel informatie opgezocht op Internet. Alles wat je moet weten voor het machinequilten vind je daar. Maar op internet staat ook veel onzin omdat experts/artiesten gesponsord worden en vaak zelf verkopen. Ook nemen sommige bloggers klakkeloos informatie over.
Ik heb ook cursussen gevolgd, maar ook dan is de informaie niet altijd juist,  onvolledig. Mij werd ook daar van alles aangepraat, wat ik nog altijd niet mis of nodig heb. Wat ik er kon kopen was achteraf veel te duur. Ik heb geld over voor mijn hobby, maar heb te vaak spullen aangeschaft die te duur waren of die ik nooit heb gebruikt. 
In dit blog wil ik verslag doen van mijn zoektocht naar kennis en informatie over het machine quilten en in het bijzonder het free motion quilten.
Wat je ook aanschaft voor het machinequilten, hoeveel cursussen je ook volgt en hoeveel informattie je ook leest op internet en in boeken, je leert het alleen door te oefenen, oefenen, oefenen ........

Een van mijn eerste oefeningen: stipling. Daarna heb ik nog heel veel moeten oefenen voor ik mijn eerste whole clothe kon maken.

Een van mijn eerste berichten in deze serie zal dan ook gaan over hoe je kunt oefenen en hoe je op verloren momenten kunt oefenen, zelfs als je niet achter da machine zit. Ook geef ik je tips hoe je van oefenmateriaal leuke kadoś maakt.

First wall hanging and a giraffe baby quilt.

'Kijk' (Look) is my first wall hanging and it will really hang in our house. It also is the first quilt which hand finished binding!

30 x 35 inch wholecloth

I took a piece of my purple cotton. I just wanted to practice and I used thick polyester, the only material I had at that moment, to make a sandwich.
I started with the heart and used metal thread for it. Then I chose my colors: shades of yellow, orange, green and blue. I used thin polyester thread and some multi color rayon. I wanted to use a lot of different fmq patterns.
I stitched the patterns very small, but I enjoyed the sewing. I like the sound of my sewing machine at this speed. In the bottom part I used a lot of botanical patterns. I quilted a snail, a hedgehog, stars, a moon, a spider and two dragonflies. So there is much to look at and much to discover. That is why this quilt is named: 'Kijk' (Dutch for 'Look').
There are mistakes and not all the stitches are equal. But, although it started as a practice quilt, I decided not to cut it in place mats, but to hang it on a wall in my house.

For the backside I used a dark purple polyester thread:

I found a picture of a baby quilt like this tuesday on the Internet (just a picture on Pinterest, no name unfortunately). Friday night there would be a dinner party with my husbands son Sander and his lovely wife Nicole, who expected a baby in November. So I want to give them the quilt.
I cycled down town Amsterdam and tried to find fabrics in all the fabric stores I know, but I did not succeed. So I looked on the Internet stores and found the fabrics in a store 25 miles away for Amsterdam and decided to go there on Wednesday.
I was very lucky. I think I found the best Quilt Shop in The Netherlands. Lots and lots of fabrics. More than 2600! There is all you need to quilt, knit or do anything else with fabrics and yarn. And last but not least: a very friendly owner. I will go back there for sure! It is not far from a place where I lived for more than thirty years, so I can combine visits to my friends with visits to the quilt shop!

I bought beautiful soft fabrics and nice woollen batting and pieced the pieced the quilt top the same night. Thursday  busy with the the giraffe applique on the top and shopping again in Amsterdam for the bells in the horns.  I also did rustle plastic in the ears. Friday morning I quilted the quilt and hand sewed the binding. Ready to go to the dinner party!

Sander and Nicole were very happy with the quilt and we had a very nice evening with them, Nicole’s parents and the delicious Spanish tapas. They cooked for two days! The best were the home made Serrano croquettes.

Next week I will post the pattern of the Giraffe baby quilt.

Feathers, place mats, AAI quilt and harem pants

Another week with cool weather in the Netherlands. School holidays but no summer yet. I But warmer weather is promised next week! I hope so.
But cool weather means more time behind my sewing machine to practice free motion quilting. I finished three quilts this week. A mini quilt for the Alzheimer Art Guilt Initiative, which is on his way to the United States.

Unwareness

An 8x12 inch mini quilt for the Alzheimer Art Guilt Initiative.
Top and back: Egyptian cotton, Thread: Gütermann Rayon multi color.
When I am machine quilting for vife minutes, I am unaware of the world around me. When I see Alzheimer patients afraid of the world around them, I wish they were unaware of the world around them.
I hope someone will want to pay for the quilt.

I had to practice the technique of thread painting ribbons for the SewCalGal fmq challenge 2013#1. Finally a ribbon I like and I have another postcard to give away.
I found a excellent tutorial with pattern of Libby Liebermann. In the tutorial Libby sews a quilt with a big ribbon. She uses a zigzag to fill the colors of the ribbon and she is wright. Of course.

I made place mats for one of my daughter in law. We celebrated the birthday of my husband in her garden, so our two grand daughters could play. We do not like to go to a restaurant with kids of 2 and 3.  They have a table cloth of Indonesian batik in red colors. So I hope she likes the place mats.
I still had to choose the binding and to finish another pair. Batik or red?

Another finish this week: the harem pants of colorful batik for grand daughter Sascha. We took her to the goat farm and of course she want to wear it! And the pants for her foll had to be ...... pink.

My WIP's for next week:
1. I still have those big pieces of purple Egyptian cotton. Two 100 inch square and two 35 inch square. I started to quilt a whole cloth of the smaller pieces. Almost 30% of the quilting is finished. Quilting, micro quilting and hyper quilting with different colours of thread and metal thread. I will finish it this weekend. Fun! It will be the first quilt wall hanging in my house.

Wandering through the beautiful Waterland of Amsterdam

Today we made a long walk.
We live in the North of Amsterdam. 10 minutes by bus to the centre of Amsterdam, but a twenty minutes walk to 'Waterland' the beautiful, quiet region north east of Amsterdam. It is surrounded by a lake: IJsselmeer. The Waterland is ideal for cycling and wandering.

Five minutes walking from our apartment we pass  ''t Sluisje' (The Lock), a cafe. A nice place to stay and have a drink or a meal. When the sun is shining there are a lot of tourists enjoying the view.

We walk out of Amsterdam over the Nieuwerdammerdijk en Schellingwouderdijk, one of the many dikes in The Waterland.

 After 45 minutes walking over the dike, we reach the first village: Durgerdam 

When you wandered through Waterland, you understand the name of this area.

We walked to another small village: Ransdorp, you can see the tower. Long time ago they had no money to finish the top.

Big church and town hall for a village with 200 inhabitants!

Not too bad, living in Ransdorp.

 

 These wooden walls are typical for old houses in the region, the Zaanstreek' North of Amsterdam. They are named 'Zaanse houses' after another big city in this region: Zaandam. They are part of our national heritage

 After three hours almost back in Amsterdam we walked next to a lot of community gardens. In a lot of gardens just a lot of beautiful flowers nowedays. Most people live whole summer in the little, luxury house in their garden.

 

Back at our balcony we enjoyed our view on a pond with a glass of good wine.
Life is not too bad.

Practice, practice .......

I am looking forward to the beautiful things everybody made this week.
This week I decided to practice a lot. I started a few months ago to practice with Leah's Day  free motion quilting project and Leah's Guilt Along. I learned a lot and quilted my first quilts. I am now addicted to free motion quilting, I want to make beautiful quilted whole clothes and trapunto quilts, but need a lot of free motion practice before I start.  I quilt Leah's new patterns for practice, but I do not want to quilt along with Express Your Love or other quilts. So I was glad I found the SewCalGal 2013 free motion challenge. I started with the five challenges and finished them. But on the SewCalGal website is more to learn: there are more challenges: the challenges of SewCalGal 2012 free motion challenge.
All challenges have a tutorial of an expert quilters and all the experts invite you to try new patterns and techniques. There is even a tutorial form Leah! The assignments are so fun to do. So I decided this week to free motion quilt a lot and do as many as tutorials as possible.

I bought a lot of dark and light purple cotton. (6 yard,width 97 inch) Cotton with a shine! I sandwiched a 28 inch square sandwich for a tiles design (Tutorial Angela Waters). In every tile another assignment. Just like Leah, I like to wake up early, so I can quilt before my husband awake. So I practice every day. I finished the tile sampler Thursday afternoon, just before dinner.

I used a too thick polyester batting for the 'trapunto effect' but the quilt was stiff and sometimes difficult to handle. Had to find another batting.

I will cut the quilt in pieces for postcards and place mats.

 I love micro quilting. Stitching so slow that you can almost count the stitches, so I like the July and October challenges:

October challenge, tutorial Teri Lucas (8 inch square)

July challenge: Cindy Needham  (8x11 inch) It is a bit Zentangle quilting!

A fun challenge is the August Bonus tutorial by Susan Brubaker Knapp: take a picture and quilt the Pattern. I used this picture

And this is a first try in the last tile of the quilt.

Next time I will use more colors!
I will use more pictures to quilt postcards and mini quilts. So fun!


The April tutorial of Don Linn: transferring a pattern with tulle. I used this method  for the September challenge of Paula Reid.
The transfer of the pattern with the tulle, was not a success. The chalk lines  disappear, so I need to finished with drawing three corners without pattern. I used too thick polyester batting, so it was not possible to lay the tulle on the sandwich beck again. The lines did not fit anymore.
I was out of tulle, so I used this fabric which I found in my stash.

                                                                                                                                                                    

I printed Donś pattern and pinned the paper on Sandwich and sewed on the lines. As you can see it is difficult to remove all the paper.
