Piecing elephants

I need two baby quilts. I need one for a friend who helped me. Another one will be for the son of a dear friend. She was my neihtbour when our children were todlers. So our children played together for years. The son lost a baby and now they have a healthy girl, but his wife is ill. I think an unexpected elephant babyguilt will do some good. That is the reason why I quilt along with the Elephant Parade van SewFreshQuilt. I loved the Elehant Parade design and want some exesice in piecing.

Ik heb twee baby quilts nodig. Een voor een vriend die me geholpen heeft. En nog een voor de zoon van een goede vriendin. Ze woonde naast me toen de kinderen klein waren en de kinderen hebben veel samen gespeeld. De zoon heeft een baby verloren. Zij zijn na een angstige zwangerschap ouders van een gezonde dochter, maar nu is zijn vrouw ziek. Ik wil hem opvrolijken met een quilt van zijn vroegere buurvrouw. Dat verwacht hij vast niet. Omdat ik ook meer ervaring wil hebben met het naaien van blokken doe ik mee aan de Olifantenparade Quilt along van SewFreshQuilt. Ik vind het een prachtig en vrolijk ontwerp ook nog!

I have a bit of a ADHD type, I think. It is difficult for me to focus. It drives my family crazy, because I am looking half of my life for things I get lost the other half of my life. By impulsive behaviour I broke three times a leg and when I was a child I had six times a concussion. I really want my keys at the same place when I arrive at home, but as soon as I am through the door something attracts my attention and I forget my keys.....

It is a pity that I need focussing whenI am piecing small and big elephants. First af all focussing when cutting the fabric the right sizes and the right colors and sewing the right pieces together on the richt way!!!! I never knew I could make so many mistakes. For instance: I cutted fabric for 28 small elephants, but when I finished there were 24 elephants, 16 to the right and 8 to the left! Of course there were some bits and pieces next to my piles with elephants. So stupid, but I really tried to focus! Piecing is not my cup of tea!!And pick out stichches neither. But no matter how long it takes, I will finish the elephant parade. The piles of big and small elephants make me proud.

I geloof dat ik een beetje ADHD typetje ben. Ik vind het moeilijk om me te concentreren, hoe hard ik het ook probeer. Mijn familie wordt er gek van. Ik heb door impulsief gedrag drie keer een been gebroken en als kind zes keer een hersenschudding gehad. Ik zoek bijvoorbeeld altijd naar mijn sleutels. Ik denk weleens dat ik de ene helft van mijn leven zoek, naar dingen die ik de andere helft van mijn leven kwijt maak Ik wil echt mijn sleutels steeds op dezelfde plaats leggen als ik thuis kom, maar zodra ik de deur in ben, trekt iets anders mijn aandacht en dan weet ik niet meer waar ik mijn sleutels neerleg .....

Maar je aandacht erbij houden is wel nodig als je lapjes aan elkaar naait. Er gaat zoveel fout als je niet oplet. Bij het knippen en naaien van de olifanten ging ook alles fout. Ik heb bijvoorbeeld 28 kleine olifanten geknipt, maar eindigde met 24 olifanten (16 naar rechts en 8 naar links!) en een hoop lapjes. Die lapjes aan elkaar naaien is niet 'mijn ding! Naden uithalen ook niet trouwens. Maar ik zal toch de olifantenparade afmaken en twee mooie baby quilts maken. Ik kan toch ook wel trots naar die stapels grote en kleine olifanten kijken.

They want eyes!!!!

I love free motion quilting. I love the sound of the machine and you need a different kind of focus. I like the way my thoughts wander in all kind of directions when it is easy and it is not difficult for me to focus when I need too. It is a bit like meditating. I love to do it after a busy day. So I left the piecing a few days and will free motion a sampler. I wanted to piece the front of a cushion, but after the elphants I let my machine and the thread do the work. I use the machine of my daughter, because I still not have my machine back from the dealer.

My sketchbook-book arrived and I will use it for the design of the quilt. So many creative ideas in the book!

Ik hou van quilten uit de vrije hand. Je hebt daar een andere concentratie bij nodig dan bij het naaien van lapjes, Ik hou van het geluid van de machine en mijn gedachten dwalen alle kanten op terwijl ik stik. Maar als het nodig is, kan ik me makkelijk concentreren, een soort mediteren is het voor mij. Ik wordt er rustig van. Ik doe het ook graag na een drukke dag. Daarom ga ik na mijn olifanten maar een proefquiltje maken. Ik wilde de voorkant eerst van kleine lapjes maken, maar na de olifanten doe ik dat maar niet. Ik laat de machine en het draad het werk doen. Omdat ik mijn machine nog niet terug heb van de dealer, gebruik ik de naaimachine van mijn dochter. Het boek met inspiratie heb ik ontvangen en dat ga ik zeker bij het quilten gebruiken. Het boek is echt inspirerend.

Inspiration and elephants

Debby of Quilty Pleasures shared in her post ' Friday favorites' designers she loved. I followed the link to Sue Bleisweis and had a nice afternoon exploring her website/ blog. I love her colors, designs and methods. Sue wrote some books and I decided to give myself some presents. Within a few days I will recieve her Sketchbook:

Debby van Quilty Pleasures vertelt in haar bericht 'Friday Favorites' over haar favoriete ontwerpers. Ik volgde haar link naar de blog/website van Sue Bleisweis en had een paar goed bestede uren. I hou van haar kleuren, ontwerpen en manier van werken. Sue heeft een aantal boeken geschreven en ik besloot mijzelf een paar cadeaus te geven. Overmorgen krijg ik haar 'Sketchbook'.

I am a scientist and think as a scientist, but I want to devellop some creative skills. I looked inside The Sketchbook challenge at Amazon's and I am very curious. I think the excersizes in this book will be a lot of fun. I preordered another book of Sue. The book explains how she dyes her fabric and her way to applique and quilt. I think a can use her methods to play with my piles of dyed cotton to make colorful quilts without piecing.

Ik ben een beta type en denk ook zo, maar ik wil wat meer creatieve vaardigheden ontwikkelen. Ik heb in The Sketchbook Challenge gekeken op Amazon en ik ben erg nieuwsgierig. De oefeningen zullen ontzettend leuk zijn. Ik heb ook een ander boek besteld, waarin Sue uitlegt hoe ze haar katoen verft en hoe ze haar quilts maakt met haar manier van appliqueren en quilten. Ik heb een stapel zelf geverfde katoen in allerlei kleuren en het boek zal me helpen zonder allerlei kleine lapjes aan elkaar te naaien vrolijk gekleurde quilts te maken.

My sewing machine is still at Husqvarna and the dealer does not know when it is repaired. So I borrowed the machine from my daughter and allthough I do not like piecing, I am busy for the Elephant Parade Quilt along. I want to make some quilts with this pattern, so I sewed 10 big and twenty small elephants. So much grey elephants are a little bit boring and need some colorful elephants too.

Ik heb nog steeds mijn naaimachine niet terug. De winkel heeft geen flauw idee wanneer de machine gerepareerd is. Ik heb mijn dochters naaimachine geleend en ben aan de slag gegaan voor de Olifanten optocht Quilt Along. Ik wil meerdere olifanten quilts maken en heb daarom meteen maar tien grote en twintig kleine olifanten blokken gemaakt. Omdat al die grijze olifanten zo saai zijn, heb ik ook nog een paar gekleurde gemaakt.

Tension problems again: no machine for two or three weeks

No finishes this week. Last week I made some mini quilts with less tension problems. Only a quilter would have seen that the tension was not equil everywhere. But quilting my last graffity mini was terrible. I heared the automtic tension changing during sewing! I made a picture of a detail of the the back. Last month when I brought my machine to the dealer with the same tension problems. After four weeks they did not look inside the machine at all, but sewed for a few minutes and they said the problem was my universal darning foot and the embroidery thread I use. I had to buy a Husqvarna darning foot and they let me pay 40 euro for the foot!

After a month of sewing with terrible stitches at the back of my quilts, the wire at the top of the darning foot broke, so it did not hop anymore. I emailed Husqvarna and of course they told me to go to the dealer. But when I went to the dealer yesterday, they told me they will bring my machine to Husqvarna for the repair and Husqvarna replaced my darning foot.

I read some bad reviews of my dealer on the Internet this week. I should have looked for reviews, before buying the machine.

Geen werk gemaakt deze week. Vorige week heb ik wat miniquiltjes gemaakt, dat ging redelijk. Mooi genoeg aan de achterkant om ze weg te geven. Alleen een quilter had gezien dat de spanning van het garen niet constant was. Mijn laatste graffity quilt was een ramp. Ik heb een detailfoto gemaakt van de achterkant. Om de paar minuten breekt de draad en aan de achterkant is allemaal bovendraad zichtbaar. Duidelijk is ook te zien dat de spanning van het draad voortdurend verandert. Ik hoor de automatische draadspanning schijven in de machine ook draaien tijdens het naaien. Twee maanden terug heb ik de machine naar de dealer gebracht. Die hebben de machine twee maanden gehouden, om er dan een paar minuten op te naaien. Toen werd geconstateerd dat er geen problemen waren. Het lag aan het borduurgaren dat ik gebruikte (waar mijn machine niet geschikt voor is, volgens hun) en het universele quiltvoetje dat ik gebruikte. Ik moest een Husqvarna quilt voetje voor 40 euro kopen (bij andere dealers 32 euro!!) .

Na een maand met lelijk quiltwerk heb ik Husqvarna gemaild. Toen ik gisteren met mijn machine naar de winkel terug ging, werd me verteld dat de machine terug gaat naar Husqvarna en ik heb een nieuw voetje van Husqvarna gekregen.

Ik heb wat beoordelingen van mijn dealer opgezocht op Internet. Ik had dat moeten doen, voor ik daar mijn machine had gekocht.

I sew for more than 40 years on a Husqvarna 2000. I cleaned the machine myself and could fix everything. No problems at all. A few months ago I sewed together with my daughters mother in law for our grandchild, Kate. We used her Husqvarna 4000 and it sewed so well. I will try to buy this week an old Husqvarna 2000or 4000 and keep it to sew when my new machine is in repair.

Ik heb voor meer dan veertig jaar op een Husqvarna 2000 genaaid en zelf onderhouden. Helemaal nooit problemen Een paar maanden terug naaide ik samen met de andere oma van kleindochter Kate op haar oude Husqvarna 4000. Ook die machine naaide als een zonnetje. Ik ga van de week op Marktplaats een oude Husqvarna 2000 of 4000 kopen, zodat ik kan naaien als mijn nieuwe machine bij de dealer is. Leve Marktplaats!!!

It is a little bit winter in The Netherlands. A little bit snow and a little bit cold, but the sun is shining. My hubby is a victim of this little bit winter. He is running two times a week about 10 km, but last week he run on some snow with to little warming up. He has a big muscle injury and a lot of pain So he needs to sit in his chair with a thick leg up and he is depended on my qualities as a nurse.

Hoewel het maar een beetje winter is in Nederland is mijn man al een 'slachtoffer' van de kou. Zoals altijd ging hij trimmen, maar met dat beetje sneeuw en weinig warming up, heeft hij een flinke spierscheuring in zijn been. Met een dik been omhoog zit hij nu in zijn stoel en is afhankelijk van mijn kwaliteiten als verpleegster.

Micro quilts.

Welcome to my new followers: Wolfje, Ada, Leanne and Glinda. Ada is Dutch but lives in Greece for many, many years. Nice to meet her like this.
Nieuwe volgers zijn Wolfje, Ada, Glnda en Leanne. Welkom. Ada is een Nederlandse die al heel lang in Griekenland woont. Leuk haar zo te ontmoeten.

Busy with babysitting this again.Our youngest grandchild, Kate, is getting better. Less cramps, so she is more a happy baby and gives us a lot of smiles. When we put her in her crib she is not crying anymore but looking around with her big eyes until she sleeps. Yesterday her two grandmothers, were bathing her and she was so happy in the warm water. So glad she has less pain. It is awfull when a baby cries in pain and you can do so little for her.

Weer een drukke week met oppassen. Ons jongste kleinkind, Kate, heeft minder last van krampjes en is nu een vrolijke baby die veel lacht. Als je haar nu in de wieg legt, kijkt ze met haar grote ogen rond en gaat rustig slapen. Zo blij dat ze minder pijn heeft. Zo naar als je voor een van pijn huilende baby zo weinig kan doen! Haar twee oma's hebben haar dit weekend in bad gedaan en ze genoot zo van het warme water!

I had some dyed fabric with beautiful colors. Last year I had a project with friends. We had a meeting almost every week.I used the fabric and made five micro quilts to give to them when we had our last meeting. I hope they use it as a mug rug.

Ik had nog een lap met prachtige kleuren die ik zelf geverfd had. Het laatste jaar heb ik met een groep vrienden bijna elke week vergaderd voor een project. Van de week was onze laatste bijeenkomst. Ik heb uit de lap micro quiltjes gemaakt om aan hen te geven. Ik had ook nog een paar placemats om weg te geven. Ik hoop dat ze de quiltjes gebruiken als mug rug.

Quilting graffity with my sketchbook and problems with my Husqvarna Sapphire

I have always some white sandwiches ready to quilt. I thought my machine was OK and I wanted to have some fun sewing graffity. I drwaw a lot last weeks so it was time for needle and thread. I draw patterns I want to use in my sketchbook. You can see the result

Ik heb altijd een paar witte sandwiches klaar liggen. Ik dacht dat mijn machine weer in orde was en wilde wat graffity quilten. Ik heb zoveel getekend, dat het tijd werd voor naald en draad en wat kadootjes om weg te geven.Ik tekende patronen in mijn schetsboek die ik wilde gebruiken. Uiteindelijk is dit het resultaat.

This pattern is to big.

When I want to quilt graffity I choose patterns and draw them on a page in my sketchbook, After sewing a pattern I will randomly choose another pattern of filling. I add different borders around patterns and add echo quilting. In my opion there must be some equilibrium between the patterns. On a small smapler like this (14 inch x 18 inch) only patterns in the middle may dominate. So the pattern at the bottom right is too big.

Als ik graffity will quilten, kies ik patronen en teken die in mijn schetsboek. Na het naaien van een patroon kies ik willekeurig een ander patroon of een vuller. Ik naai verschillende randen langs patronen en naai echos om de randen. Op een kleine proeflap zoals deze (30 cm x 40 cm) mogen alleen patronen in het midden groot zijn. Het patroon rechtsonder is dus te groot geworden.

After sewing the first half hour everything was OK. Same pattern on the back and only the thread of the bobbin visible. But after that i hear the tension of my Husqvarna Sapphire 875Q quilting machine changing during sewing and the thread broke. I tried a lot, but the problem was not to solve. I finished the sampler just for exersice. I brought my expensive sewing machine to the dealer, who keeps it everytime three weeks, to say there is no problem. I need to use his brother thread and my problems will be solved! The Aurifill thread is the problem!!! I emailed this time Husqvarna, because I have three years garantee and want to use bautiful thread other quilters use and sew with no tension problems. I like to hear from toher bloggers if they have problems with the Husqvarna Sapphire too and if they have a solution for the problem.

Het eerste half uur naaien ging prima. De spanning was goed en de achterkant zag er mooi uit. Maar toen kamen er rare geluiden uit mijn machine en veranderde de spanning terwijl ik naaide. Na een paar minuten breekt steeds de draad en de achterkant ziet er afschuwelijk uit. Ik heb een Husqvarna Sapphire 875Q en nog twee jaar garantie. Ik ben mijn machine nu twee keer met deze klachten kwijt geweest bij de dealer en dan krijg ik de machine terug met de mededeling dat er niets aan de hand is. Ik moet hun brother garen gebruiken en geen garen die ik wil, zoals Aurifill, die zoveel quilters gebruiken. Ik heb nu naar Husqvarna gemaild en hoop dat zij een oplossing hebben. Heeft een andere blogger ook deze problemen met de Husqvarna Sapphire en daar een oplossing voor. Ik zou dat graag willen horen.

Je suis Charlie: quilting

Whole day there is news about what happened in Paris. I am always confused with terrorism. The victims are innocent people who left home without knowing they will be an victims within a few houres. The wrong place and wrong time ..... Their families have to deal with a lot of grieve the rest of their lives. Terrible. We have dear moslim friends. It has nothing to do with religion. Everybody has the right to believe or not to beleive and to speak.

De hele dag is er nieuws over de afschuwelijke gebeurtenissen in Frankrijk. Ik ben er altijd stil van als ik bedenk dat onschuldige mensen 's ochtends hun huis verlaten en er geen idee hebben dat zij binnen een paar uur onschuldige slachtoffers zijn van tereur. Hun families hebben er mee te leven de rest van hun leven. Wij hebben goede moslimvrienden. Het heeft niets met godsdienst te maken. Iedereen mag geloven of niet en om te spreken.

My youngest daughter lives not far from us in Amsterdam, I go to her a few times a week to take care of little Kate for a few hours, She can smile so precious!!! It makes my day.

Ik ga een paar keer per week naar kleine Kate. Mijn dochter woont niet ver van me ook hier in Amsterdam. Kate lacht al zo lief. Daar kan ik zo van genieten.

SewCalGal has a 2015 free motion quilting challenge. It is about improving free motion quilting skills with quilting pillows. I did the 2013 challenge and had a lot of fun and learned a lot. So I am so happy to join the 2015 challenges. This week I made the first pillowcover. A heart with a design of Luann Kessi. Every free motion quilter had to look in her wonderful sketchbook for inspiration I draw and sew a lot of het designs already just for fun.
I am glad there is a 2015 fmq challenge. It will be so inspiring to see the pillows of all the quilters how join the challenge.

SewCalGal heeft weer een quilt uitdaging voor 2015. Ik heb zoveel geleerd van de uitdaging van 2013 en zo plezier gehad van de opdrachten, dat ik besloten heb dit jaar weer mee te doen. Dit jaar worden er allemaal kussenhoezen gemaakt. Deze maand o.a. een ontwerp van Luann Kessi. Ik heb me al vaak door haar schetsboek met ontwerpen laten inspireren en daar veel pezier mee gehad.
Ik ben blij met de nieuwe uitdaging. Het is zo leuk om te zoen wat anderen van de opdracht maken.

First challenge of Januari:

I made a miniquilt inspired by a picture of Free motion at the river. Is is with parfait dyes fabric. My design was quite diffecult, so the second mini quilt is a improved version another design which is more easy to sew. It is made of anothere fat quarter of the same parfait dyeing fun. I will publish the pattern soon.\\

Ik heb een mini quilt gemaakt van een quiltje dat ik zag op de website van Free motion at the river. Het patroon is erg ingewikkeld en daarom nu aangepast, zodat ht eenvoudiger te naaien is. De lappen van beide quiltjes komen uit dezelfde fles van het verven. Ik zal snel het patroon op mijn blog zetten.

The scraps of the fiirst miniquilt were enough for an 11 inch by 11 inch block. I had just enough fabric to sew the second mini quilt.
Iwill make more of these blocks with scraps of dyed fabric. May be it will be a rainbow quilt.

Van de restjes van de eerste quilt heb ik een blok gemaakt. (11 inch x 11 inch) Ik ga meer van deze blokken maken van restje geverfd katoen. Misschien wordt dat een regenboog quilt.

The first days in 2015

Tomorrow it is back to normal. Just another monday, just another week. We had happy, busy days with family and all the grandchildren. A canaltrip with the two eldest girls to see all the objects of the Amsterdam light fetival and we went to the movie. So fun to be with the two girls together. They have the age to quarrel and be best friends within five minutes again. Kate, our youngest granddaughter was with us new years eve. Six weeks old! She had a cold and abdominal cramps, so I did not dare to sleep. It was so special to take care of such a little grandchild.

Morgen begint had gewone leven weer. Een gewone maandag, een gewone week. We hebben fijne, drukke dagen gehad met onze familie en alle kleinkinderen. Een rondvaart langs het licht festival en naar een film in Eye met de twee oudste meidjes. Het is zo leuk met die twee meidjes samen. Ze hebben de leeftijd om binnen vijf minuten ruzie te hebben en weer elkaars beste vriendinnetje te zijn! Kate. onze jongste kleindochter van zes weken was bij ons met oud en nieuw. Ze was verkouden en had last van krampen. Ik dorst nauwelijks te slapen! Maar het was heel speciaal om voor haar te mogen zorgen.

For everybody who could not visit Amsterdam during the light festival a few pictures. Amsterdam with the canals is such a beautiful city for a light festival.

Voor iedereen die niet naar Amsterdam kon komen met het lichtfestival een paar foto's. Met alle grachten zijn de lichtobjecten zo mooi!!!!

Last week I did not sew a lot, but I had a fun day dyeing fabric. I wanted rainbow colors, but I think I used to much red and bleu dye powder. So the colors were to dark. I had to try again with far less dye powder.I want to have more green and orange fabrics, and less intensive colors.

Van de week heb ik heel weinig genaaid, maar ik heb wel katoen geverfd. Ik denk dat ik teveel blauw en rood heb gebruikt. Ik heb nauwelijks oranje en groene lappen. Ik moet ht weer eens proberen met veel minder verf.

The only thing I sew was a miniquilt. I saw a beautiful tabletopper like this on the blog of Free motion by the River.There was no pattern so I drwaw my own pattern. I used 'parfait dyed'' fabric. The quilting is just some stitch in the ditch. I was happy with my piecing. But it is not perfect at all. So I decided to make some of these mini quilts next week, just to practice piecing. This block cost me five hours to finish. Hope the last one is much quicker.

Het enige dat ik heb gemaakt is een mini quiltje van een lap die ik vorige week geverfd hebt. Ik had een mooi voorbeeld gezien op de blog van Free motion by the River. Ik vond geen patroon dus heb ik het patroon zelf uitgetekend en uitgewerkt. Ik wil een paar van deze miniquiltjes maken van verschillende lappen die ik heb gekregen met 'parfait verven'. Gewoon om het maken van blokken te oefenen. Dit blok koste me vijf uur!!! Ik hoop dat de laatste veel sneller gaat.
