A ZebraZ finish and a crib

It is true, when you have been ill, you value the small things in life more. I enjoyed a walk and a lunch with my two daughters in the gardens of Castle Groeneveld. Since my youngest daughter is a mother too, we are more together.

Het is waar: als je ziek geweest bent, waardeer je kleine dingen meer. Ik heb genoten van een wandeling en lunch met mijn beide dochters in het park van kasteel Groeneveld. Nu mijn jongste dochter ook moeder is zijn we meer samen.

Kate will not be the youngest in the family for long. My husbands son will have a baby in December. I used their Moses basket for Kate. So I decided to renew the bedding before I returned the basket. They choose a blue fabric with funny little snails. I will knit a blanket and sew some sheets, before I return it.

Kate zal niet lang meer de jongste van d familie zijn. Mijn mans jongste zoon en zijn vrouw krijgen in december weer een kleintje. Ik heb hun Moses mandje gebruikt voor Kate. Daarom heb ik het mandje opnieuw bekleed voor hen. Ze hebben een stofje met grappige, kleine slakjes uitgekozen. Ik wil nog een dekentje breien en een paar lakentjes naaien, voor ik het mandje terug geef.

Another finish this week is my second ZebraZ quilt: a baby quilt. Now I need to finish the ZebraZ todler quilt. The quilt is already sandwiched, so I only need to to quilt and bind it.  I wanted to quilt the ZebraZ quilts with zebra traces, but the quilts are backed with red fleece.  So I use my walking foot to quilt this time. Free motion quilting is for me the most fun part of making a quilt, so I will not use fleece backing often.

Van de week heb ik ook mijn tweede ZebraZ quilt, een babyquilt, afgemaakt. Nu moet ik alleen nog de ZebraZ kleuterquilt afmaken. De top is al klaar en gesanwiched, dus alleen nog quilten en afbiezen. Ik wilde de quilts quilten met een patroon van sporen pootafdrukken van zebra's, maar omdat de achterkant van fleece is, heb ik besloten om mijn dubbele transportvoet te gebruiken voor het quilten. Quilten uit de vrije hand, gaat niet zo makkelijk met fleece.

Matisse mini

What seems to be a flue was a pneumonia. I always go to the dokter a little too late. A friend told me, that some of her friends did not recover of a flue and suffered a pneunomia. I did not believe I had a pneumonia, but finally I went to the doctor and she gave me medication. I never knew coughing could be so painfull!!! With the medication I am recovering well and quick. It is nice to have a reason to be in bed when you are so tired. My daughters and husband were so kind for me and now I am almost recovered. Tomorrow I will spent the day with my daughters and granddaughters!! I am looking forward to it and will enjoy it.

Wat een griep leek, was een longontsteking. Ik ga altijd te laat naar de dokter, maar toen een vriending van me vertelde, dat enkele van haar vrienden na een griep ziek bleven en longontsteking bleken te hebben, ben ik toch maar gegaan. Ik kreeg medicijnen en nu ben ik aan het opknappen. Wat kan hoesten pijn doen!! Nooit geweten. Toch is het heerlijk om in bed te liggen als je je zo beroerd voelt. Mijn dochters en man waren schatten voor me en ik ben al bijna opgeknapt.
Morgen ben ik samen met mijn dochters en hun dochters. Ik kijk er naar uit. Na zo ziek geweest te zijn, kan ik zo genieten van de gewone dingen.

Easy! Kate loves to eat and she likes everything.

It is impossible for me to do nothing. My sewing machine was on the table and I find moments to sew a little. No piecing or free motion quilting, just binding the pile with sketchbook pages.  No thinking while sewing, just routine stitching. Yesterday, on my husbands birthday, we had a quiet day with no visitors. I enjoyed some free motion quilting and finished two Matisse mini's. I planned to use black for the quilting, but multicolored yellow seems a better choice. I think it is a good choice. I used the shapes of the applique for the free motion quilting pattern. It is fun to embroider Matisse signature!

Ook als ik ziek ben, moet ik af en toe wat om handen hebben. De naaimachine stond heel de week op tafel. Geen ingewikkeld naaien, maar af en toe heb ik wat schetsboek pagina's afgebiesd. Gisteren was mijn man jarig, maar het bezoek komt over enkele weken. Ik heb voor het eerst weer wat genaaid. Ik wilde de Matisse mini's met zwart quilten, maar heb gelukkig multicolor geel gebruikt. Ik
denk dat het een goede keuze was. Ik heb de vormen van de applicaties in het quiltpatroon terug laten komen.

Het is leuk om Matisse handtekening te borduren.

Inspired by Matisse and Kate

Last week, as usual,  I was  a day with my youngest granddaughter, Kate, who happened to live in Amsterdam too. She was ill (a flue)  and coughed badly. Every time she coughed, she starts crying. Now it is my turn to have a flue. I get a vacination, but the 'American flue' which is in The Netherlands now, was an unexpected virus, so no protection against that one. Now I understand why Kate was crying, coughing is so painfull! But, just like Kate, I need to slow down, sleep a lot and wait a week to feel better. When I am tired of doing nothing. my husband takes good care of everything, I sew a little bit, when I am tired of doing nothing.

Ik heb, zoals elke week, vorige week op mijn kleindochter gepast. Ze had griep en hoestte lelijk. Als ze hoestte ging ze hard huilen. Zo sneu. Ze lacht en speelt altijd, maar was nu zo lusteloos. Ze leek weer beter, maar nu is het mijn beurt. Ik ben wel ingeënt, maar de Amerikaanse griep die nu heerst, was niet verwacht en de inenting bood dus geen bescherming. Ik snap nu waarom Kate zo huilde. Het hoesten is zo pijnlijk!! Maar net als Kate moet ik kalm aan doen en veel slapen en dan voel ik me volgende week een stuk beter. Als ik gaar ben van het niets doen, ga ik wat naaien. Genoeg dingen te doen, waarbij ik niet hoef na te denken.

I do not lay in my bed all day. I am looking for Matisse information on the Internet. I am so interested in his cut outs and still need to go to the Matisse exhibition in Amsterdam this summer. I find a lot of information about Matisse: pictures, videos, interviews and animations on these two fabulous websites:  Matisse colored the paper sheets himself with paint before using them for his cut outs. He used the left over pieces too. The colors of his cut outs changes due to the quality of the paint.

Ik lig niet de hele dag in bed. I zoek naar informatie over Matisse op het Internet. Ik ben zeer geinteresseerd in zijn werk en moet nog steeds naar de tentoonstelling deze zomer. Ik vond een schat aan informatie (plaatjes, videos, intrviews met Matisse, animaties van zijn werkwijze) over Matisse op twee websites: , Tekenen met een schaar van het Tate Modern en deze interactieve tentoonstelling van Moma org. Matisse kleurde zelf zijn papier eerst met verf en gebruikte ook vaak de papierrestjes. De kleuren die we nu zien op zijn werk, zijn niet meer de kleuren die Matisse zag. Niet alle verf die hij gebruikte was kwalitatief zo goed en kleuren vervagen.

I made two Matisse blocks and a another Matisse mini this week. All rough edge applique. When I look to the blocks, I understand why Matisse is a master and I just somone using his technique.
I runned out of thread to quilt the blocks. So I ordered big cones by mail. It was here after 20 hours! Almost quicker than driving to the shop by myself. I quilted the minis with a pattern  called 'Matisse meandering'. I used the thread to quilt my two minis with this pattern. I binded thse mini's and because after more than three years approving my binding routines I binded most of my sketchbook pages too. Still four to go!

Ik heb Matisse blokken en nog een Matisse mini quiltje gemaakt. Als ik er zo naar kijk, snap ik waarom Matisse een meester is en ik zomaar iemand die zijn techniek uitprobeert. Ik blijf de neiging hebben om de lapjes te verschuiven.
Mijn zwarte en witte garen dat ik gebruik om te quilten was op, Maar het werd binnen een dag geleverd door de firma Matson uit Utecht. Wat een service! Bijna sneller dan zelf op en neer rijden naar Utrecht, Ik heb het garen gebruikt om de mini te quilten met een patroon dat ik 'Matisse meanderen' noem. Ik heb de mini's afgebiesd en meteen maar een stapeltje sketchbook quiltjes ook. Na drie jaar al die quilts en placeats afbiezen, draai ik daar eigenlijk mijn hand niet meer voor om.

After cold weeks we have better, sunny wheather here. So I will dye cotton on our terrace for more Matisse blocks and may be a quilt as soon I feel better.

Het is eindelijk mooi weer, dan kan ik als ik helemaal ben opgeknapt buiten op het terras buiten katoen verven voor wat Matisse blokken en misschien zelfs een quilt. Maar dan moet ik me wel beter voelen.

Chateau Lombut and a ZebraZ finish

We had a wonderful time in Lombut, France. It is nice to live in a castle for a short time. I ignore spiders and other creeping, scaring, little things. They live in the castle for many, many years and I am just a visitor!!! I enjoy the silience and view out of the bedroom window.

We hebben een heerlijke tijd gehad in Lombut, Frankrijk. Zo leuk ook even in een kasteel te wonen. I negeer de spinnen en andere kruipende beestjes. Zij leven er al eeuwen en k ben maar een bezoeker. Ik geniet van de stilte en het uitzicht uit het slaapkamer raam.

As soon it is light outside, Pierre is busy in his gardens. His kitchen garden and the gardens in and outside the walls of the castle. He even takes care of his horses. He loves to bring vegetables, strawberries, rhubarb to his visitors. When he has dinner with us, he even bakes a rhubarb pie for dessert!

Zodra het licht is buiten, is Pierre bezzig in zijn tuinen. De tuinen in en buiten de muren van het kasteel en in zijn moestuin. Zijn gasten worden verrast met groenten, aardbeien en rabarber. Als hij met ons eet, bakt hij zelfs een rabarbertaart.

My shoes and poles ready for a walk through the fields and the woods of the French Ardennes.

I love Scandinavian thrillers since I read years ago Sjowall and Wahloo. In France I read a thriller every day. I loved the books of Hakan Nesser, but not the books of Roslund and Hellstrom. Allthough they won a lot of prices. Why so much details of child abuse or a slaughter? So I am happy to sew again. Just enough time for finishing one of the ZebraZ quilts.  I already finished the top before we went to France, but after quilting,binding and some embroidery this week it is off my to do list. Quilting is not easy with fleece backing, but I succeeded in zebra stripe quilting.

Ik hou al van Scandinavische thrillers sinds ik Sjowal en Wahloo las. In Frankrijk las ik een thriller elke dag. Ik vond de boeken van Hakan Nesser goed, maar niet de boeken van Roslund en Hellstrom. Waarom zoveel details van een kinderverkrachting of slachtpartij? Ik heb weer een dag kunnen naaien en heb een baby ZebraZquiltje af. De top was al voor ons vertrek naar Frankrijk af, maar nu is de quilt van mijn to-do-lijst af. Quilten is niet makkelijk met een achterkant van fleece, maar de 'zebrastrepen' zijn gelukt.

On our way to the castle...

I will never do it again: posting a to do list for next week quilting like I did last week. Me and lists: it never worked. I should know better. I had to make time for the family, but I did some sewing too. I made two ZebraZ and seven bird blocks (SewFreshQuilt) and finished two tops. It is for a baby quilt and a doll quilt. The baby quilt I will keep for myself to use when my youngest granddaughter is with me and the doll quilt is for my eldest granddauhgter. Her brother will get the big ZebraZ quilt when it is finished.

Ik zal het nooit meer doen: lijstjes posten met wat ik de komende week ga quilten.  Lijstjes werken niet voor mij. Ik heb heel andere dingen gedaan. Ik moet beter weten.
Ik moest extra tijd maken deze week voor familie. Toch heb ik nog genaaid. Twee zebras en zeven vogels van Lorna van SewFreshQuilts. Samen met de blokken die ik over had van de grote Zebraz quilt heb ik een top gemaakt voor een poppenquiltje en een top voor een boxkleed. Het boxkleed is voor in de box als mijn jongste kleindochter komt. Het poppenquiltje is voor mijn oudste kleindochter. Haar broer krijgt de grote ZebraZ quilt, waaraan ik vorige week heb gewerkt.

The visit at the Matisse exhibition was anther thing I planned but what did not happened. My daughter is ill, so we have to go another time. After the blocks with the big Matisse appliques I made another one with smaller appliques. Like the three ZebraZ quilts it is ready to quilt.

Het bezoek aan de Matissetentoonstelling ging ook al niet door, omdat mijn dochter ziek is. We moeten dus een andere keer gaan, maar ik heb nog wel een Matisse blok gemaakt met kleine applicaties. Het moet net als the drie ZebraZ gequilt worden.

Next week I do not plan anything at all. We are going for a short visit to France, where we stay in this castle. We are going there for almost fifteen years. We are friends with the owner, a very kind old man and we look forward to see him again. It is such a quiet place and it is fun to live in a castle, allthough it is only for one week every year.

Volgende week heb ik helemaal geen naaiwerk gepland. We gaan een weekje naar de Franse Ardennen in dit kasteeltje. We zijn bevriend met de eigenaar en komen er nu el vijftien jaar ieder jaar een weekje. We zien er naar uit hem weer te ontmoeten. Het is leuk om af en toe een weekje in een kasteel te wonen.

Matisse in my sketchbook

Busy week with two birthdays. My daughters are 41 en 38! I cannot believe it. Since I have grandchildren, I often have flashbacks of my girls as little children. But when I recieved my eldest daughters app 'Congratulations! You are a mother today for 41 years!!!' (with a smiley), I realised that it was a long time ago they were my 'little children'. Time flies, indeed.

Drukke week met de verjaardagen van mijn dochters. Ze zijn nu 38 en 41!!! Ik kan het niet geloven. Zeker nu ik kleinkinderen heb, denk ik vaak terug aan de tijd dat mijn dochters nog klein waren. Toen ik van de week het appje van mijn oudste dochter ontving:"Gefelicteerd!! Je bent nu 41 jaar moeder!!!" (wel met een smiley!), besefte ik dat het heel lang geleden is dat ze klein waren. Inderdaad, de tijd vliegt.

Inspired by the posters of  the Matisse-exhibition  all over Amsterdam

In a older post I told you about the posters of Matisse at almost every busstop in Amsterdam. Next Thursday I go with my eldest daughter and grandchild to the Matisse exhibition. I googled 'Matisse' for information and inspiration. I did not finish my sketchbook theme 'Circles' yet, but I started with the next theme: 'Matisse'. I love, love, love, love his colorfull paper collages. It looks so easy, but his work is so strong. So I finished four pages with black background, applique and black freemotion quilting (swirls, paisley, microstippling and a few feathers). After binding the pages there was something missing: the signature of Matisse!

In een eerder bericht  heb ik verteld over de poster van Matisse bij elk bushokje in Amsterdam. Donderdag ga ik met mijn oudste dochter en kleindochter naar de Matissetentoonstelling in het Stedelijk Museum. Ik heb 'Matisse' gegoogeld voor inspiratie. Ik vind het werk van Matisse mooi, en houd vooral van zijn gekleurde papiercollages. Het lijkt zo eenvoudig, maar is heel sterk! Ik ben even gestopt met het schetsboekthema 'Cirkels' en ben met het thema 'Matisse' begonnen. Ik heb vier pagina's gemaakt. Gekleurd applique op een zwarte achtergrond met zwarte quilten uit de vrije hand (spiralen, paisleys, microstippling en een paar kleine veren). Nadat ik de pagina's afgebiesd had, ontbrak er iets: de handtekening van Matisse!

The Zebraz top is finished with a border and I bought red fleece for the backing. Today I will sandwich the quilt, so it is ready to quilt and bind.

De Zebrazquilt heeft nu een rand en ik kocht rode fleece voor de achterkant. Vandaag ga ik de lagen sandwichen, zodat de quilt van de week gequild en afgebiesd kan worden.

The binding will be red with white polka dots.

My list for next week is:

1. A Matisse tablerunner
2. Quilting and binding the big ZebraZ-quilt.
3. One more circle sketchbook page.
4. Design the small Zebraz quilt with the four left over Zebra-blocks.

ZebraZ and more ZebraZ!!!!

First of all welcome to my new followers!
Allereerst een welkom voor mijn nieuwe volgers!

I recieved yesterday a picture from my old neighbour and good friend  It shows the childs of her son on a elephantparade quilt. (pattern: Sew Fresh Quilt) They are a happy family now  with their baby daughter after a lot of sorrow. They were so surprised and glad when they recieved the quilt from an old neighbour. I am glad they love the quilt and use it with joy.

Ik heb gisteren een foto gekregen van de zoon van mijn oude buurvrouw en goede vriendin. Op de 'Elephantparade' quilt (patroon Sew Fresh Quilt) zitten zijn kinderen. Heerlijk hun kinderen na een hoop narigheid en verxriet van hun ouders zo te zien zitten. Ze waren blij verrast toen zij de quilt van een vroegere buurvrouw kregen. Ik ben blij dat ze de quilt mooi vinden en gebruiken.

Today it is the birthday of our king and a lot of streets are decorated in orange and crowded with people wearing orange outfits. Especially in Amsterdam there are a lot of festivities and the whole city it is very crowded. Too much for us, so we stayed at home.

Omdat het vandaag op koningsdag zo druk is in Amsterdam zijn we thuis gebleven.

It was all ZebraZ this week!!! I have a big pile with twenty ZebraZ. (pattern: Sew Fresh Quilts) When I am piecing, I make a lot of mistakes,....... so it takes a lot of time. I wanted to enlarge the Zebraz pattern and change it a little bit, to sew a ZebraZ father or mother, but this ZebraZ are so big, so I changed my mind. I will sew two toddlers quilts. One for grandson Huub and one for myself to lay little Kate on when she is with me. When I sew my 20th Zebra I thought I did not want to sew any Zebra ever. But for the second toddles quilt I need to sew 12 more Zebraz!!!! That will be next week. This week it will be thinking about a border for my first ZebraZ-top, Matisse applique and free motion quilting. So we need to go to the Matisse exhibition in The Museum of Amsterdam

Het waren van de week hier alleen maar Zebraz!!! Ik heb nu een stapel met twintig Zebraz  (patroon Sew Fresh Quilt) Ik wilde het patroon vergroten en aanpassen om een vader of moeder Zebra te maken, maar het wordt te groot. Deze kleine Zebraz-blokken zijn al groot (30 cm x36 cm).  Ik wil twee kleuterquilts naaien. Een voor onze kleinzoon Huub en een voor mezelf, voor als kleine Kate bij ons is. Ik had het idee dat ik even geen Zebraz meer kon zien, maar ik ga er toch maar twaalf bij maken. Maar deze week eerst nadenken over de rand van de eerste ZebraZ  top, Matisse-applique en wat quilten uit de vrije hand voor mijn schetsboek. Dat betekent dat we deze week eerst naar de Matisse tentoonstelling in het Stedelijk museum gaan.

What went wrong?? I had twenty different fabrics, so all my Zebraz should
be different. But two are the same?! I will have to replace one of the ZebraZ!

I started already with the Matisse Applique. A nice way to use the scraps of my Mifty baby quilts. The right colors for Matisse.

Ik ben al begonnen met de apllicaties van Matisse. Kom ik ook af van mij Nijntje-babyquilts restjes katoen. De juiste kleuren voor Matisse.
