This week was a lot of fun with paperpiecing. Part of the fun is making my own patterns. First I tried QuiltAssistant free software to draw paper piece patterns. But I have EQ7 and I used this software too. Just for the exercise I made my own pattern of the cat silhouet, a free pattern of Quiltart Design . It is a 4 inch pattern and I enlarged it to 10 inch. As you can see the pattern is already a block and it will be a cushion or placemat for my granddaughter Salijn. With QuiltAssistant and  with EQ7 it is easy to design paper piece patterns. QuiltAssistant is very user friendly and I did not need information to make the pattern. That was not the case with EQ7, but I found excellent lessons in English on the website of Mini patch und Landschön.
Next week is les computer and more sewing.

Deze week ben ik met veel plezier bezig geweest met paper piecen. Ik vind het ook leuk om zelf patronen te maken. Ik probeerde vorige week het gratis programma QuiltAssistant dat je in verschillende talen gratis kunt downloaden. Maar ik heb EQ7 ook en heb deze software ook gebruikt. Het eerste wat ik uitgeprobeerd heb is het maken van het patroon van de kat. Het is een 4 inch blok van Janeen van Niekerk van Quiltart Design. Ik heb er een 10 inch blok van gemaakt. Het blok is al genaaid en wordt een kussen of placemat voor mijn kleindochter Salijn. Met QuiltAssistant en met EQ7 is het eenvoudig om een paper piece patroon te maken. QuiltAssistant is erg gebruiksvriendelijk en kon ik zonder verdere informatie het patroon maken. Voor EQ7 had ik de uitstekende lessen , maar met de uitstekende lessen van de website van Mini patch und Landschön nodig.
Ik hoop dat het volgende week minder computer en meer naaien is.

My own purple cows and some fmq fun

First time on a bike. With the soft bumper safe and ready to go!!

This week our youngest grandchild, Kate, stayed a night with us. I feel better with her bed in our bedroom.  I like to hear her breathe. She is not sleeping all night but awakes a few times. It is a joy to hear her playing  and 'talking' to her little doll and giraf and falling in sleep again. She is eight months old and I can see she is so proud to learn. She likes to stand and keeps her legs straight when I try to let her sit down on a quilt on the ground. When she stands right up, she looks in triumph! She was also very proud to bike with her mother for the first time yesterday. I think next time her mother brings her by bike and not by car.

Deze week heeft ons jongste kleinkind, Kate, een nachtje bij ons geslapen. Ik voel me beter als Kat4e bij ons op de kamer slaapt, zodat ik haar kan horen ademen. Ze slaapt niet de hele nacht aan een stuk door, maar ik hoorde haar steeds spelen met haar pop en giraf en weer in slaap vallen. Dat is zo leuk! Ze is pas acht maanden oud, maar je kan nu al zien, dat ze trots is als ze iets nieuws leert. Ze wil graag staan en houdt haar voeten gestrekt, als ik haar wil laten zitten op een quilt op de vloer. Als je haar laat staan kijkt ze heel triomfantelijk. Ze was ook trots toen ze gisteren voor het eerst op de fiets zat bij haar moeder. De volgende keer brengt haar moeder haar met de fiets en niet met de auto.

This week I was busy with paper piecing colored cows. It is true what they say: paper piecing is addictive. I was inspired by the colored cows of Leanna Paylor on her blog: Not afraid of colors. Go and visit her website with colored cows and flamingos. She loves to pimp her cows. The pattern for these cow is free to download on the blog of Sandi of PieceMealQuilt.
I learned myself this week to paper piece with my own patterns inspired again bij Leanne Payer of not afraid of color. I will sure pimp my cows with flowers, hats and other funny things. I want to sew 12 cows for a fun quilt, that I will keep for my self.

Deze week was ik druk met mijn koeienblokken (paper piece) Het is waar waar velen mij voor waarschuwden: paper piecing is verslavend. Ik ben geinspireerd door de gekleurde koeien van Leanna Paylor van het blog: Not afraid of colors. Ik raad je aan om haar blog  met o.a. gekleurde koeien en flamingo's te bezoeken. Ze pimpt haar koeien zo grappig! Het patroon van dit blok is gratis te downloaden van het blog van Sandi: PieceMealQuilt.

It was not all paper piecing this week. I binded and quilted two placemats with paper pieced chinaware. Two placemats weree quilted with easy swirls, but that is not very rewarding. So yesterday evening I decided to pimp the teapot and saucers placemats with more advanced free motion quilting. It is so more fun.
I showed a picture of  a paper piece pattern made with pencil and paper. Alida commented and told me  about Quilt Assistent, free software to make patterns on my computer. Thank you Alida!!! I enlarged the cow pattern and made the pottery patterns already.

Ik ben deze week niet alleen met paper piecing bezig geweest. Ik heb twee placemats gemaakt van mijn blokken met aardewerk. Ik had eerder twee van deze placemats simpel met wat slingers gequilt. Dat vond ik achteraf niet mooi en saai om te doen.  De twee andere placemats heb ik daarom gisteravond gepimpt met interessantere quiltpatronen.
In dit bericht liet ik het met potlood gemaakte paper piece patroon zien. In haar reactie raadde Alide me aan om Quilt Assistant, gratis software,  te gebruiken voor het maken van deze patronen. Dank je Alida, ik heb al het koeienpatroon vergroot en de patronen van de schotels, kopjes en theepot gemaakt.

New challenge: paper piecing fun

I love free motion quilting, so I sewed quilts to free motion quilt for hours and hours with a lot of colors thread. I love colors. I did not like piecing unitill I found the elephants and ZebraZ on Lorna's blog at SewFreshQuilt. I loved her Elephant quilt and joined her Elephant Parade Quilt Along with pleasure. I sewed a lot of elephants blocks and made three elephant parade quilts. I sewed to many ZebraZ blocks and made three ZebraZ quilts, Sewing the elephants, ZebraZ, flowers and birds was fun and my family and friends loved the quilts. So piecing is fun for me and I will make less one clothe quilts. Learning new things is fun.

I hou van quilten uit de vrije hand, daarom naaide ik quilts om heerlijk uren te kunnen quilten uit de vrije hand met allerlei kleuren garen. Ik hou van kleuren. Ik had een hekel aan het maken van blokken, totdat ik de olifanten en ZebraZ vond op Lorna's blog at SewFreshQuilt. Ik vond de olifanten zo leuk dat ik meedeed aan Lorna's Elephant Parade Quilt Along. Ik naaide teveel olifant-blokken en maakte uiteindeelijk drie elephant parade quilts. Ik naaide teveel ZebraZ blokken en maakte drie ZebraZ quilts, Het naaien van de blokken voor de olifanten, ZebraZ, bloemen en vogeltjes was zo leuk! Mijn familie en vrienden waren blij met de quilts. Het naaien van blokken vind ik nu leuk en ik zal het zeker vaker doen.

I love to stroll around the blog of  Tartankiwi  Juliet is a real artist with this technique. Another great blog is the blog of  Janeen van Niekerk: Quiltart Designs. Both blogs have fun quilt alongs with beautiful quilts and a lot of patterns. 

As a child I loved mikado puzzles: What is the sequence of the sticks? Paper piecing patterns are fun puzzles for me too!! What is the sequence of sewing this blok? You need for both puzzles the same skills. Try it yourself with this cow block pattern.

Door aan Linky Feestjes deel te nemen, maak je kennis met nieuwe blogs en quilt technieken. Sinds een paar maanden ben ik geinteresseerd in blogs met patronen voor paper pieced blokken. Geweldinge blogs zijn die van Tartankiwi  van Juliet, een achte artiest. Ook de blog van Janeen van Niekerk: Quiltart Designs is geweldig. Beide blogs hebben  Quilt Alongs met mooie patronen, maar die zijn nog iets te moeilijk voor mij.

Als kind hield ik al van mikado-puzzles en zo kijk ik ook naar de patronen voor paper pieced blokken!! In welke volgorde naai je de stukjes van dit patroon? Ik gebruik dit soort patronen als een puzzel. Probeer het zelf maar eens met het blok voor de koe!

I love colors and cows too. And I love the blog of  Leanna Paylor: Not afraid of color. Blocks with this cow I met on the Internet several times and I saved the pattern long time ago. You can download the pattern for free here at peacemealquilts.com. Two weeks ago Leanne's purple cow persuades me to try paper piecing. So this week I decided to sew a purple cow and printed the pattern. But the pattern has a lot of pieces and I decided to try something less difficult first. Again inspired by these beautiful blocks of Leanna I drew my first paper piecing patterns and sew teapot, cup and plate blocks. And yes I like paper piecing too!!!!! It was so fun!!! I see already my own purple cow walking!

Ik hou ook van kleuren en koeien en van de website van  Leanna Paylor: Not afraid of color. Deze koe was ik al vaker tegengekomen op internet en ik heb het patroon bewaard. (Je kan het patroon vrij downloaden van Peacemealquilts,com) Maar het was Leanna's paarse koe die me overhaalde om een paper piecing patroon uit te proberen. Nadat al die patroondelen van de koe voor me lagen, besloot ik toch maar eerst iets eenvoudigs te doen. Alweer geinspireerd door blokken van Leanna Paylor, heb ik mijn eerste patronen zelf getekend. Ik heb een theepot, kopjes en borden genaaid. Het was zo leuk!!! Ik zie mijn eigen paarse koe er al aan komen lopen!

Ready to give a away all three ZebraZ finishes

Three ZebraZ quilts finished !!!!

Finally the last ZebraZ quilt is finished!!!
It started with one fun ZebraZ block  for a baby quilt. I did not like piecing, but the ZebraZ van SewFreshQuilts were so fun, that I wanted to try to sew some ZebraZ  blocks. I looked for fabric stores  to buy different black and white fabrics and sewed a  pile with ZebraZ blocks. When I was ready to assembly the top, I realised there were to much ZebraZ blocks for one top. The block was bigger than I realised. So I had enough ZebraZ to sew three tops! I only needed to sew some more birds blocks for the design. Last week I quited the last ZebraZ quilt and this morning I binded it. Today all three quilts go to my daughter in law. The toddler quilt is for her son Guus, the doll quilt is for her daughter Sascha and the baby quilt is for her sister, who will have a child soon. I showed Sascha her quilt and told her about the other quilts and aksed her to keep it a surprise for her mother. She is only five, but she kept this secret!! So it is a comlete surprise for my daughter in law.

Eindelijk zijn de ZebraZ quilts af.
Het begon met een grappig ZebraZ blok van SewFreshQuilts. Ik hou niet van blokken naaien, maar de zebrablokken waren zo leuk, dat ik het moest proberen. Ik kocht steeds meer zwarte-witte lapjes in allerlei verschillende winkels en naaide steeds meer Zebra blokken. Toen ik zover was dat ik een top kon naaien, bleek dat ik veel te veel blokken had. Ik had me in de grootte vergist. Ik had genoeg blokken om drie quilts te maken. Er moesten alleen een paar vogelblokken bij voor het ontwerp. De laatste quilt heb ik van de week doorgestikt en vanochtend afgebiesd. Vandaag geef ik de quilts aan mijn schoondochter. De grote quilt is voor haar zoon Guus, het poppenquiltje is voor haar dochter Sascha en de babyquilt voor haar zus, die gauw moeder wordt. Sascha heeft haar quilts al gezien, maar ze heeft 'het geheim' bewaard voor haar moeder. Dus het is echt een verrassing. Ik ben benieuwd hoe mijn schoondochter reageert.

Finally it is summer in The Netherlands, but we have record temperatures. So we live outside and very slow. That is one of the joys of retirement!

Fijn dat het nu eindelijk hier zomer is. Met deze reordtemperaturen leven we buiten en erg langzaam. Dat is een van de voordelen van met pensioen zijn!

A ZebraZ finish and a crib

It is true, when you have been ill, you value the small things in life more. I enjoyed a walk and a lunch with my two daughters in the gardens of Castle Groeneveld. Since my youngest daughter is a mother too, we are more together.

Het is waar: als je ziek geweest bent, waardeer je kleine dingen meer. Ik heb genoten van een wandeling en lunch met mijn beide dochters in het park van kasteel Groeneveld. Nu mijn jongste dochter ook moeder is zijn we meer samen.

Kate will not be the youngest in the family for long. My husbands son will have a baby in December. I used their Moses basket for Kate. So I decided to renew the bedding before I returned the basket. They choose a blue fabric with funny little snails. I will knit a blanket and sew some sheets, before I return it.

Kate zal niet lang meer de jongste van d familie zijn. Mijn mans jongste zoon en zijn vrouw krijgen in december weer een kleintje. Ik heb hun Moses mandje gebruikt voor Kate. Daarom heb ik het mandje opnieuw bekleed voor hen. Ze hebben een stofje met grappige, kleine slakjes uitgekozen. Ik wil nog een dekentje breien en een paar lakentjes naaien, voor ik het mandje terug geef.

Another finish this week is my second ZebraZ quilt: a baby quilt. Now I need to finish the ZebraZ todler quilt. The quilt is already sandwiched, so I only need to to quilt and bind it.  I wanted to quilt the ZebraZ quilts with zebra traces, but the quilts are backed with red fleece.  So I use my walking foot to quilt this time. Free motion quilting is for me the most fun part of making a quilt, so I will not use fleece backing often.

Van de week heb ik ook mijn tweede ZebraZ quilt, een babyquilt, afgemaakt. Nu moet ik alleen nog de ZebraZ kleuterquilt afmaken. De top is al klaar en gesanwiched, dus alleen nog quilten en afbiezen. Ik wilde de quilts quilten met een patroon van sporen pootafdrukken van zebra's, maar omdat de achterkant van fleece is, heb ik besloten om mijn dubbele transportvoet te gebruiken voor het quilten. Quilten uit de vrije hand, gaat niet zo makkelijk met fleece.

Matisse mini

What seems to be a flue was a pneumonia. I always go to the dokter a little too late. A friend told me, that some of her friends did not recover of a flue and suffered a pneunomia. I did not believe I had a pneumonia, but finally I went to the doctor and she gave me medication. I never knew coughing could be so painfull!!! With the medication I am recovering well and quick. It is nice to have a reason to be in bed when you are so tired. My daughters and husband were so kind for me and now I am almost recovered. Tomorrow I will spent the day with my daughters and granddaughters!! I am looking forward to it and will enjoy it.

Wat een griep leek, was een longontsteking. Ik ga altijd te laat naar de dokter, maar toen een vriending van me vertelde, dat enkele van haar vrienden na een griep ziek bleven en longontsteking bleken te hebben, ben ik toch maar gegaan. Ik kreeg medicijnen en nu ben ik aan het opknappen. Wat kan hoesten pijn doen!! Nooit geweten. Toch is het heerlijk om in bed te liggen als je je zo beroerd voelt. Mijn dochters en man waren schatten voor me en ik ben al bijna opgeknapt.
Morgen ben ik samen met mijn dochters en hun dochters. Ik kijk er naar uit. Na zo ziek geweest te zijn, kan ik zo genieten van de gewone dingen.

Easy! Kate loves to eat and she likes everything.

It is impossible for me to do nothing. My sewing machine was on the table and I find moments to sew a little. No piecing or free motion quilting, just binding the pile with sketchbook pages.  No thinking while sewing, just routine stitching. Yesterday, on my husbands birthday, we had a quiet day with no visitors. I enjoyed some free motion quilting and finished two Matisse mini's. I planned to use black for the quilting, but multicolored yellow seems a better choice. I think it is a good choice. I used the shapes of the applique for the free motion quilting pattern. It is fun to embroider Matisse signature!

Ook als ik ziek ben, moet ik af en toe wat om handen hebben. De naaimachine stond heel de week op tafel. Geen ingewikkeld naaien, maar af en toe heb ik wat schetsboek pagina's afgebiesd. Gisteren was mijn man jarig, maar het bezoek komt over enkele weken. Ik heb voor het eerst weer wat genaaid. Ik wilde de Matisse mini's met zwart quilten, maar heb gelukkig multicolor geel gebruikt. Ik
denk dat het een goede keuze was. Ik heb de vormen van de applicaties in het quiltpatroon terug laten komen.

Het is leuk om Matisse handtekening te borduren.

Inspired by Matisse and Kate

Last week, as usual,  I was  a day with my youngest granddaughter, Kate, who happened to live in Amsterdam too. She was ill (a flue)  and coughed badly. Every time she coughed, she starts crying. Now it is my turn to have a flue. I get a vacination, but the 'American flue' which is in The Netherlands now, was an unexpected virus, so no protection against that one. Now I understand why Kate was crying, coughing is so painfull! But, just like Kate, I need to slow down, sleep a lot and wait a week to feel better. When I am tired of doing nothing. my husband takes good care of everything, I sew a little bit, when I am tired of doing nothing.

Ik heb, zoals elke week, vorige week op mijn kleindochter gepast. Ze had griep en hoestte lelijk. Als ze hoestte ging ze hard huilen. Zo sneu. Ze lacht en speelt altijd, maar was nu zo lusteloos. Ze leek weer beter, maar nu is het mijn beurt. Ik ben wel ingeënt, maar de Amerikaanse griep die nu heerst, was niet verwacht en de inenting bood dus geen bescherming. Ik snap nu waarom Kate zo huilde. Het hoesten is zo pijnlijk!! Maar net als Kate moet ik kalm aan doen en veel slapen en dan voel ik me volgende week een stuk beter. Als ik gaar ben van het niets doen, ga ik wat naaien. Genoeg dingen te doen, waarbij ik niet hoef na te denken.

I do not lay in my bed all day. I am looking for Matisse information on the Internet. I am so interested in his cut outs and still need to go to the Matisse exhibition in Amsterdam this summer. I find a lot of information about Matisse: pictures, videos, interviews and animations on these two fabulous websites:  Matisse colored the paper sheets himself with paint before using them for his cut outs. He used the left over pieces too. The colors of his cut outs changes due to the quality of the paint.

Ik lig niet de hele dag in bed. I zoek naar informatie over Matisse op het Internet. Ik ben zeer geinteresseerd in zijn werk en moet nog steeds naar de tentoonstelling deze zomer. Ik vond een schat aan informatie (plaatjes, videos, intrviews met Matisse, animaties van zijn werkwijze) over Matisse op twee websites: , Tekenen met een schaar van het Tate Modern en deze interactieve tentoonstelling van Moma org. Matisse kleurde zelf zijn papier eerst met verf en gebruikte ook vaak de papierrestjes. De kleuren die we nu zien op zijn werk, zijn niet meer de kleuren die Matisse zag. Niet alle verf die hij gebruikte was kwalitatief zo goed en kleuren vervagen.

I made two Matisse blocks and a another Matisse mini this week. All rough edge applique. When I look to the blocks, I understand why Matisse is a master and I just somone using his technique.
I runned out of thread to quilt the blocks. So I ordered big cones by mail. It was here after 20 hours! Almost quicker than driving to the shop by myself. I quilted the minis with a pattern  called 'Matisse meandering'. I used the thread to quilt my two minis with this pattern. I binded thse mini's and because after more than three years approving my binding routines I binded most of my sketchbook pages too. Still four to go!

Ik heb Matisse blokken en nog een Matisse mini quiltje gemaakt. Als ik er zo naar kijk, snap ik waarom Matisse een meester is en ik zomaar iemand die zijn techniek uitprobeert. Ik blijf de neiging hebben om de lapjes te verschuiven.
Mijn zwarte en witte garen dat ik gebruik om te quilten was op, Maar het werd binnen een dag geleverd door de firma Matson uit Utecht. Wat een service! Bijna sneller dan zelf op en neer rijden naar Utrecht, Ik heb het garen gebruikt om de mini te quilten met een patroon dat ik 'Matisse meanderen' noem. Ik heb de mini's afgebiesd en meteen maar een stapeltje sketchbook quiltjes ook. Na drie jaar al die quilts en placeats afbiezen, draai ik daar eigenlijk mijn hand niet meer voor om.

After cold weeks we have better, sunny wheather here. So I will dye cotton on our terrace for more Matisse blocks and may be a quilt as soon I feel better.

Het is eindelijk mooi weer, dan kan ik als ik helemaal ben opgeknapt buiten op het terras buiten katoen verven voor wat Matisse blokken en misschien zelfs een quilt. Maar dan moet ik me wel beter voelen.
