Cows and calfs

What a beautiful summer weather this week in The Netherlands. Sail 2015 could not have better weather. We enjoyed the tall ships and all those other ships on the river IJ in Amsterdam.

Wat was het heerlijk weer van de week. Het kon niet beter hier met Sail 2015. We hebben genoten van die mooie  oude schepen en van al die bootjes op het IJ.

I had a wonderful weekend with four schooltime friends. It was the 25th time we met, and I am the only one who missed a weekend. We tell everytime the same stories about the teachers and students long time ago. In that time four of us divorced and met another man again. We all lost our parents, but all are doing well in good health. I brought this present for our host.

Een heerlijk weekend gehad met mijn schoolvriendinnen. Het is nu de 25e keer geweest dat we elkaar zo zien. Ik ben de enige die ooit een weekend gemist heeft. We vertellen altijd dezelfde verhalen over de leraren en medeleerlingen. Vier van ons zijn in die tijd gescheiden en hebben weer een ander gevonden. We hebben allemaal in die tijd onze ouders verloren, maar hebben het nu goed en zijn gezond. Ik heb dit kado meegenomen voor de gastvrouw van deze keer in Eindhoven.

I made another mad cow, a pink one. I must have done something wrong: this cow is smaller than her sisters. A smaller block of a cow is not a block of a calf. Suddenly I wanted to have a pattern for a calf. May be I will add calfs to my mad cow project. I try to draw patterns with EQ7, but that was time consuming this week. After updating to Windows 10. It was impossible to print and EQ7 did not respond anymore. But yesterday the calf pattern was printed and could be tested.

I heb nog een 'mad cow' genaaid, maar er is iets fout gegaan met het printen van het patroon. Deze koe is kleiner dan haar zusters. Maar een kleine koe is nog geen kalf. Ik wil nu ook graag kalfjes in mijn project. Daarom een kalfpatroon getekend met EQ7, maar na het updating van Windows 10, liep het programma steeds vast en kon ik niet printen. Gisteren lukte het me eindelijk en kon ik het kalfblok testen. Ik pas het patroon aan (er zitten en paar foutjes in!) en probeer het nog een keer.

On the market I bought some cotton and after adjusting the pattern, I will sew another mad cow and daughter. 

Op de markt heb ik wat leuke gekleurde katoen gekocht en als ik het patroon heb aangepast, ga ik een nog een mad cow en dochter naaien.

I did some crochet yesterday night. I am looking for a bath mat, but I cannot find the right size. So I try to crochet one and made yesterday this sample. Fun project to take with me to France next week. But I need to buy a bigger pen to crochet. This one is 0.6 inch, I think I need 0,8 inch.

Ik heb wat gehaakt gisteravond. Ik zoek badmatten, maar kan de goede maten voor ons niet vinden. Ikzag gehaakte matten tegen en heb nog materiaal omdat zelf te maken. Een mooi project om mee te nemen op vakantie naar Bretagne volgende week.!! Nog wel een andere haaknaald kopen. 20 mm.

Sail Amsterdam 2015

It is Sail Amsterdam with those beautiful tall ships and very nice summer weather. Very crowdy on the river IJ and in the streets of Amsterdam.

Het is Sail 2015 met die prachtige tall ships en heerlijk zomerweer. Erg druk op het IJ en in de straten.

We took asusual, the ferry yesterday to cross the River IJ. It is amazing that
the ferries can cross the river IJ with almost that speed and everything is going well!

Millions of people come to Amsterdam to see the Tall Ships.

Mellow Yellow

Not much sewing this week, but some time to relax with friends and my grandchilds. I had a lunch with a friend is this lovely café 'Cusic'  near my house. Home made bread and cakes, delicious coffee and a very kind owner from Argentina.  The cafe is next to a canal, A lot of tourists cycle there and have a break at Cusic. It is fun to hear all those languages on the terrace. So nice to have this cafe around the corner!

Weer niet veel genaaid van de week, maar wel herlijk tijd genomen om te relaxen met vrienden en kleinkinderen. Ik ben met een vriending en mijn kleindochters wezen lunchen bij 'Cusic', tien minuten lopen van mijn huis. Eigen gebakken brood en taarten, heerlijke koffie en een erg vriendelijke eigenaar uit Argentinië! Het café ligt op een dijk aan het kanaal en er fietsen veel toeristen langs, die even stoppen bij Cusic. Leuk om al die verschillende talen te horen op het terras. Heerlijk zo'n terras om de hoek!!

Two cows are waiting to join their sisters in the meadow

I made a mini of the paper pieced shoe and a pattern for another shoe. The pattern is not difficult.

Ik heb een mini van mij eerste schoen gemaakt. Ht patroon is niet moeilijk te naaien.

I try three sizes of stippling. In the shoe micro stippling.

I found this beautiful, black shoe, and needed to make a pattern for a block. I made a 12 inch block, but it is a little to big. For my shoeproject I will sew 10 inch blocks (width) The length of the blocks differ. The pattern need a few minor changes.

I wanted te design patterns only for shoes of the Dutch designer Jan Jansen, but I found such interesting and beautiful shoes of other designers, so it will be a quilt with shoes of different designers.

Ik vond deze prachtige, zwarte schoen op het Internet.  Ik moest er een patroon voor een blok van maken. Het is een 12 inch blok, maar ik heb besloten om voor mijn schoenenproject blokken van 10 inch breed te maken. De lengte kan variëren. Het patroon moet nog een beetje aangepast worden, 

Ik wilde alleen Jan Jansen schoenen gebruiken voor mijn schoenenquilt, maar er zijn zoveel mooie schoenen van andere designers ook, dat ik besloten heb die ook te gebruiken.

Post #100: A new project! My own design: shoes

This is blogpost #100. I am quilting for 2,5 years now and I am still learnng and meeting quilt friends all over the world! Nice of you to read my posts too!!

Dit is de 100ste blogpost. Ik quilt nu 2,5 jaar  en ik leer nog steeds en ontmoet quiltvrienden over de hele wereld! Fijn dat je me blog ook leest.

Last week a great week. My two eldest granddaughters stayed with us. It is a joy to see the two playing, laughing and talking together. Of course it was fun for them that baby Kate stayed a night with us too. They wanted to learn her walk!

Van de week hebben mee twee oudste kleindochters bij me gelogeerd. Het is zo leuk om die twee samen te zien selen, lachen en praten. En ze vonden het zo leuk dat ook kleine Kate een nachtje kwam. Ze wilden haar leren lopen!

They were so tired every evening. 
Round eight o'clock after a big story they both fell asleep and at 
eight o'clock in the morning they stood next to my bed. A decent time!!

Less time to sew this week. I have been busy to knew EQ7 (it is not very user friendly!!)  and designing foundation patterns. I saw a month ago this cushion with paper pieced boot shoe on the blog Celtic Thistle Stitches. I love shoes, especially high heels. By surfing on the Internet in The Netherlands I see this month everytime an ad with a beautfiful shoe. Every time I thought: 'Ï must make my own shoe design!" and so I did. I already sewed the shoe block and sandwiched it to make a cushion. But I have really now idea how to quilt it. May be some green stippling in the border and stitch in the ditch around the shoe?

Weinig tijd dus om te naaien deze week. Wel ben ik op mijn computer bezig geweest met het beter leren kennen van EQ7 (wat een lastig programma!) en het maken van foundation patronen. .Vorige maand zag ik een kussen met een paper pieced schoen van Celtic Thistle Stitches. Ik ben dol op schoenen en vooral hoge hakken. Bij het surfen op Internet kom ik steeds een schoen tegen van de reclame van een uitvaartverzekering. Ik vind de schoen prachtig en dacht elke dag: "Hier moet ik iets mee doen" en dat heb ik gedaan. Ik heb alvast een blok genaaid en gesanwichd om er een kussen van te maken. Geen flauw idee hoe ik het ga quilten. Misschien wat groen meanderen in de rand and langs de naden om de schoen stikken?

A new project: a design of Maartje Quilt!!
I never designed a quilt. Some mini quilts and baby quilts, but not a big quilt with my own blocks. With the possibility to design foundation patterns and my love for shoes, I got inspiration for an own design....
There is a dutch shoe designer Jan Jansen. I loved to wear his shoes, I could only afford them on sale in Antwerp, Belgium. Most of his shoes are very wearable and some are very excentric! You find his shoes in musea and books too.

Een nieuw project: het ontwerp van Maartje Quilt!!
Ik heb nog nooit een eigen quilt ontworpen. Een paar mini quiltjes en babyquilts, maar geen groot quilt met mijn eigen blokken. De mogelijkheid om foundation patronen te ontwerpen en mijn belangstelling voor mooie schoenen hebben mij inspiratie gegeven voor een eigen quilt.
Jan Jansen is een van de bekendste Nederlandse schoenontwerpers. De meeste van zijn schoenen zijn heel draagbaar maar ze zijn soms ook heel excentrisch. Ik kon me zijn schoenen alleen veroorloven in de uitverkoop in Antwerpen.

I will design a quilt with foundation pieced blocks of Jan Jansen shoes, with all the little details. May be with some embellishment and applique too. I made my first pattern. Now I have to think about the back ground fabric. The design will be with blocks and of different size  I selected two shoes for the first blocks. I will be looking for the right fabrics for a while. The design of the first block is ready to be sewn. I will try to finish a block every month and the pattern will be available for free on my blog. I need to find out, how I save the pattern with a pdf writer.

Ik ga een quilt ontwerpen met foundation blokken waarop schoenen staan van Jan Jansen met alle kleine details. Misschien ga ik ook wat kralen, ritsjes, veters en veren gebruiken en wat appliqué. Het ontwerp zal zijn met blokken van verschillende grootte. Ik heb twee schoenen uitgezocht voor de eerste blokken. Voorlopig zal ik wel druk zijn met het uitzoeken van mooie lapjes. Het eerste ontwerp is klaar om genaaid te worden. Ik wil elke maand een blok maken en het patroon laatsen op mijn blog Gratis natuurlijk. Ik moet nog even uitzoeken hoe het precies moet met een pdf-writer.

I made free motion quilt samplers for my sketchbook two months ago. The themes were circles and Matisse. I added this week the labels (a present for my birthday of my youngest daughter). So I have presents to give away. Four I give away this weekend already.

Twee maanden terug heb ik deze pagina's/samplers for mijn fmq schetsboek gemaakt, thema's Matisse en cirkels. Ik heb er nu de labels die ik van mijn dochter heb gekregen aangenaaid. Ik ga ze niet bewaren maar weggeven als er zich een gelegenheid voor doet. Vier heb ik er dit weekend al weggeven.

A paper piece copyright problem (solved)

Free Bitty Block pattern of Quilt Art Design

First of all welcome to my new followers. Thank you for your interest in my posts.
This week I have a copyright problem.
I downloaded a free 'Bitty Block'  cat pattern. The block is 4 inch and I wanted to sew a 10 inch block. I posted a picture of the block and give the credit to the designer of the block, Janeen van Niekerk, and placed a link to het website Quilt Art design. I could have enlarge the pattern with a photocopy, but I used EQ7. I used EQ7 to learn how I made patterns with EQ7. Janeen mailed me to say that I need her permission to enlarge this free pattern with EQ7. She hoped I learned a lesson, but I do not understand. Almost every quilter resizes block patterns to fit a quilt without the permission of the designer.
Question 1: Is it forbidden to enlarge a pattern?
Question 2: If not: is it forbidden to enlarge the pattern with software and not by photocopy? The effect is the same.
Question 3: When you use a paper piece pattern, you make a copy for every block, because you can not reuse the pattern. I read on a website with information about copyright that it is not allowed to make a copy of a pattern. Do you need to buy the pattern for every paper pieced block? And what about using freezing paper. One copy can be used several times!?!?
Does anybody knows the anwers? Because I do not understand why Janeen of Quilt Art Design is so mad.

Deze week had ik een probleem met copyrights. Ik heb het gratis 'Bitty block' patroon van Janeen van  Quilt Art design gedownload. The Bitty blokken zijn 4 inch en ik heb het patroon met EQ7 vergroot tot 10 inch. Ik had het patroon ook vergroot kunnen uitprinten.  Janeen mailde me dat ik het patroon niet had mogen vergroten met EQ7 zonder haar toestemming. Ze hoopte dat ik een lesje had geleerd. Ik snap het niet. Ik zie toch veel quilters patronen aanpssen aan de maat van hun quilt.
Vraag 1: Is het verboden om de grootte van een patroon aan te passen?
Vraag 2; Als het niet verboden is, is het dan wel verboden om het met de computer te doen? En wat as ik freezer paper gebruik. Een kopietje kan dan meerdere keren gebruikt worden.
Vraag 3: Als ik een papieren paperpiecepatroon maak, dan moet je voor elk blok een copy maken. Als dat niet mag, moet je dan voor elk blok een nieuw patroon kopen?
Weet iemand het antwoord, want ik snap echt niet waarom Janeen van Quilt Art design zo boos is.

Update: The answers are clear: you may copy and enlarge a pattern for own use. It makes no difference in which way you change or enlarge the pattern. You do not need permission.
My advise when you use a pattern and you blog about it: Give the artist all credits and link to the website, so more sewers can met the artist and her or his work.

Update: Het antwoord is simpel en duidelijk. Je mag een patroon voor eigen gebruik kopieren en vergroten of verkleinen. Het maakt niet uit hoe je dat doet en je hebt er geen toestemming voor nodig.
Mijn advies, als je patronen gebruikt en erover blogt: Geef alle eer aan de artiest en link naar de website, zodat meer quilters de artiest en zijn of haar werk leren kennen.

Besides the copy right issue I had a lot of fun with EQ7 and paper piecing patterns. This week I will test my patterns and make them available for download.I need to find out how I do that with a PDF printer.

Naast the copyrightproblemen heb ik met veel plezier geleerd om paperpiecingpatronen te maken met EQ7. Van de week ga ik de patronen uittesten en geschikt te maken om te downloaden. Even uitzoeken hoe ik dat doe met een PDF-printer.

I already sewed some blocks with my patterns, and made placemates with the blocks. Enough space for some fmq fun. It will be a gift to my eldest daughter in law.

Ik heb al een aantal blokken van mijn patronen genaaid en er placemats van gemaakt voor mijn oudste schoondochter. Er blijft genoeg ruimte op de placemats over om uitde vrije hand te quilten. Dat vind ik toch het leukste van alles.

Mad cows and a cat

10 inch block with cotton I dyed a few months ago. 

The pattern is by Janeen van Niekerk.

I love the different shades of purple.

This week was a lot of fun with paperpiecing. Part of the fun is making my own patterns. First I tried QuiltAssistant free software to draw paper piece patterns. But I have EQ7 and I used this software too. Just for the exercise I made my own pattern of the cat silhouet, a free pattern of Quiltart Design . It is a 4 inch pattern and I enlarged it to 10 inch. As you can see the pattern is already a block and it will be a cushion or placemat for my granddaughter Salijn. With QuiltAssistant and  with EQ7 it is easy to design paper piece patterns. QuiltAssistant is very user friendly and I did not need information to make the pattern. That was not the case with EQ7, but I found excellent lessons in English on the website of Mini patch und Landschön.
Next week is les computer and more sewing.

Deze week ben ik met veel plezier bezig geweest met paper piecen. Ik vind het ook leuk om zelf patronen te maken. Ik probeerde vorige week het gratis programma QuiltAssistant dat je in verschillende talen gratis kunt downloaden. Maar ik heb EQ7 ook en heb deze software ook gebruikt. Het eerste wat ik uitgeprobeerd heb is het maken van het patroon van de kat. Het is een 4 inch blok van Janeen van Niekerk van Quiltart Design. Ik heb er een 10 inch blok van gemaakt. Het blok is al genaaid en wordt een kussen of placemat voor mijn kleindochter Salijn. Met QuiltAssistant en met EQ7 is het eenvoudig om een paper piece patroon te maken. QuiltAssistant is erg gebruiksvriendelijk en kon ik zonder verdere informatie het patroon maken. Voor EQ7 had ik de uitstekende lessen , maar met de uitstekende lessen van de website van Mini patch und Landschön nodig.
Ik hoop dat het volgende week minder computer en meer naaien is.

I sewed this week three mad cows. I have five cows so far. I want to sew at least twelve cows for a quilt. When they all are finished I will pimp all cows, like the funny cows of Not afraid of color.

My own purple cows and some fmq fun

First time on a bike. With the soft bumper safe and ready to go!!

This week our youngest grandchild, Kate, stayed a night with us. I feel better with her bed in our bedroom.  I like to hear her breathe. She is not sleeping all night but awakes a few times. It is a joy to hear her playing  and 'talking' to her little doll and giraf and falling in sleep again. She is eight months old and I can see she is so proud to learn. She likes to stand and keeps her legs straight when I try to let her sit down on a quilt on the ground. When she stands right up, she looks in triumph! She was also very proud to bike with her mother for the first time yesterday. I think next time her mother brings her by bike and not by car.

Deze week heeft ons jongste kleinkind, Kate, een nachtje bij ons geslapen. Ik voel me beter als Kat4e bij ons op de kamer slaapt, zodat ik haar kan horen ademen. Ze slaapt niet de hele nacht aan een stuk door, maar ik hoorde haar steeds spelen met haar pop en giraf en weer in slaap vallen. Dat is zo leuk! Ze is pas acht maanden oud, maar je kan nu al zien, dat ze trots is als ze iets nieuws leert. Ze wil graag staan en houdt haar voeten gestrekt, als ik haar wil laten zitten op een quilt op de vloer. Als je haar laat staan kijkt ze heel triomfantelijk. Ze was ook trots toen ze gisteren voor het eerst op de fiets zat bij haar moeder. De volgende keer brengt haar moeder haar met de fiets en niet met de auto.

This week I was busy with paper piecing colored cows. It is true what they say: paper piecing is addictive. I was inspired by the colored cows of Leanna Paylor on her blog: Not afraid of colors. Go and visit her website with colored cows and flamingos. She loves to pimp her cows. The pattern for these cow is free to download on the blog of Sandi of PieceMealQuilt.
I learned myself this week to paper piece with my own patterns inspired again bij Leanne Payer of not afraid of color. I will sure pimp my cows with flowers, hats and other funny things. I want to sew 12 cows for a fun quilt, that I will keep for my self.

Deze week was ik druk met mijn koeienblokken (paper piece) Het is waar waar velen mij voor waarschuwden: paper piecing is verslavend. Ik ben geinspireerd door de gekleurde koeien van Leanna Paylor van het blog: Not afraid of colors. Ik raad je aan om haar blog  met o.a. gekleurde koeien en flamingo's te bezoeken. Ze pimpt haar koeien zo grappig! Het patroon van dit blok is gratis te downloaden van het blog van Sandi: PieceMealQuilt.

I just finished the red cow and I see two mistakes I made mistakes with
the purple cows too. Hope the next will be will be OK without ripping out.

It was not all paper piecing this week. I binded and quilted two placemats with paper pieced chinaware. Two placemats weree quilted with easy swirls, but that is not very rewarding. So yesterday evening I decided to pimp the teapot and saucers placemats with more advanced free motion quilting. It is so more fun.
I showed a picture of  a paper piece pattern made with pencil and paper. Alida commented and told me  about Quilt Assistent, free software to make patterns on my computer. Thank you Alida!!! I enlarged the cow pattern and made the pottery patterns already.

Ik ben deze week niet alleen met paper piecing bezig geweest. Ik heb twee placemats gemaakt van mijn blokken met aardewerk. Ik had eerder twee van deze placemats simpel met wat slingers gequilt. Dat vond ik achteraf niet mooi en saai om te doen.  De twee andere placemats heb ik daarom gisteravond gepimpt met interessantere quiltpatronen.
In dit bericht liet ik het met potlood gemaakte paper piece patroon zien. In haar reactie raadde Alide me aan om Quilt Assistant, gratis software,  te gebruiken voor het maken van deze patronen. Dank je Alida, ik heb al het koeienpatroon vergroot en de patronen van de schotels, kopjes en theepot gemaakt.
