Chateau Lombut and a ZebraZ finish

We had a wonderful time in Lombut, France. It is nice to live in a castle for a short time. I ignore spiders and other creeping, scaring, little things. They live in the castle for many, many years and I am just a visitor!!! I enjoy the silience and view out of the bedroom window.

We hebben een heerlijke tijd gehad in Lombut, Frankrijk. Zo leuk ook even in een kasteel te wonen. I negeer de spinnen en andere kruipende beestjes. Zij leven er al eeuwen en k ben maar een bezoeker. Ik geniet van de stilte en het uitzicht uit het slaapkamer raam.

As soon it is light outside, Pierre is busy in his gardens. His kitchen garden and the gardens in and outside the walls of the castle. He even takes care of his horses. He loves to bring vegetables, strawberries, rhubarb to his visitors. When he has dinner with us, he even bakes a rhubarb pie for dessert!

Zodra het licht is buiten, is Pierre bezzig in zijn tuinen. De tuinen in en buiten de muren van het kasteel en in zijn moestuin. Zijn gasten worden verrast met groenten, aardbeien en rabarber. Als hij met ons eet, bakt hij zelfs een rabarbertaart.

I love Scandinavian thrillers since I read years ago Sjowall and Wahloo. In France I read a thriller every day. I loved the books of Hakan Nesser, but not the books of Roslund and Hellstrom. Allthough they won a lot of prices. Why so much details of child abuse or a slaughter? So I am happy to sew again. Just enough time for finishing one of the ZebraZ quilts.  I already finished the top before we went to France, but after quilting,binding and some embroidery this week it is off my to do list. Quilting is not easy with fleece backing, but I succeeded in zebra stripe quilting.

Ik hou al van Scandinavische thrillers sinds ik Sjowal en Wahloo las. In Frankrijk las ik een thriller elke dag. Ik vond de boeken van Hakan Nesser goed, maar niet de boeken van Roslund en Hellstrom. Waarom zoveel details van een kinderverkrachting of slachtpartij? Ik heb weer een dag kunnen naaien en heb een baby ZebraZquiltje af. De top was al voor ons vertrek naar Frankrijk af, maar nu is de quilt van mijn to-do-lijst af. Quilten is niet makkelijk met een achterkant van fleece, maar de 'zebrastrepen' zijn gelukt.

Free motion quilting elephant footprint

It is spring in The Netherlands. Blue sky, sunny and 14-18 degrees Celsius. Time for a long walk at the beach this afternoon.
Yesterday I binded my big elephant parade quilt. The back is a green fleece, that is a bit elastic and difficult to quilt without folds. When I use fleece for the back I prefer to spray the top and the back to the batting and bind the quilt before quilting. I use a wide quilt pattern. With a dense quilt pattern the soft feeling of the fleece will disappear. I stitched in the ditch the elephant parade miniquilt but for this quilt I designed a pattern with elephant footprints. Tomorrow I give it away, so I need to quilt today.

Ha, heerlijk lente in Nederland. Ik geniet van de blauwe lucht, het zonnetje en de heerlijke temperatuur.
Gisteren heb ik de grote top van de quilt voor de
olifantenparade gesandwiched en afgebiesd. De achterkant is een frisse groene fleece. Omdat het fleece elastisch is en makkelijk plooien geeft bij het doorquilten, heb ik zowel de top als de achterkant aan de vullng gelijmd en de quilt afgebiesd. Ik ga de quilt nu niet te dicht doorquilten want dan is het effect van de zachte fleece achterkant weg. De kleine miniquilt heb ik langs de naden gestikt, maar voor de grote heb ik een quiltpatroon bedacht met olifanten pootafdrukken. Morgen wil ik de quilt weggeven, dus vandaag moet de quilt afzijn.

For this mini stitching in the ditch is enough. But for that big one I need something else.

For the quilt pattern I used these pictures:
The footprint is a not interesting for a quilt pattern, so I needed the foot for the design. To make it simple the elephants get four toes.

Voor het ontwerp van het quitdesign heb ik deze foto's gebruikt. De afdruk is een beetje saai voor een quiltpatroon, dus heb ik foto's van de voet gebruikt. Om het simpel te houden heb ik de olifant vier tenen gegeven.

with quilting. The size of a foot is 3-5 inch long.

This present is already gone the day after I finished it!!

It is not easy to guilt this size ( 57,5 inch x 51 inch) on a sewing machine. I think the fleece backing made it even more difficult. I need a  lot more practice. So I must sew more big tops.
In my next post I will show my Elephant Parade doll quilt and the fmq design with elephant traces.

Het valt niet mee om quilts van deze afmetingen op de naaimachine door te quilten! Door de dikke fleece backing was het nog moeilijker. Ik moet nog veel oefenen. Dus nog meer grotere quilts maken.
In mijn volgende bericht laat ik mijn poppenquilt zien met pink elephants en een fmq design met olifanten sporen.

Hurray, my machine is back!!!

Yesterday there was a call from my dealer. After a month!!!!! Husqvarna fixed the tensionproblems with my machine. They replaced the tension unit, so there was a real problem. The dealer made excuses about not taking my problem serious. But no hard feelings, I can sew again. And my machine is stitching so beautiful!!! I brought back my daughters machine and I will free motion quilt the next few days. I almost forget how much fun it was stitching with this machine. There is still the SewCalGal's February fmq challenge ......

Gisteren eindelijk een telefoontje van de dealer. Eindelijk na precies een maand mijn machine terug!!!! Husqvarna heeft the spanningseenheid vernieuwd. Er was dus een serieus probleem en ik kreeg een zwak excuus van de dealer, dat ze de klachten niet serieus genomen hadden. Eind goed al goed, ik ben al lang blij dat mijn machine terug is en er de komende dagen gequilt kan worden. Ik moet de februari uitdaging van SewCalGal nog doen. De machine van mijn dochter heb ik al teruggebracht. Ik was bijna vergeten hoe heerlijk je kon free motion quilten met mijn eigen machine.

I am busy with the Elephant Parade quilt along. I sewed piles of blocks. made a wall hanging and an elephant quilt along top. I could not wait for the patterns of the flowers, so I drwaw my own and it turned out wel. I sew the babuquilt top,  but was to late for a present to a friend. So I wake up very early this morning and I used some blocks for this little wall hanging. I give it to my friend this morning and he was happy with it.
I had to go to the shop for batting before I can finish the baby quilt. A little time left to think about how to quilt this funny top.

Ik ben druk bezig met de Elephant Parade quilt along. Ik heb stapels met blokken genaaid. Ik wilde niet wachten op de patronen van de bloemen, daarom heb ik mijn eigen patronen getekend. Gisteren heb ik de top van de babyquilt genaaid en vanmorgen vroeg ben ik uit bed gegaan om van een paar blokken een klein baby quiltje te maken. Ik heb vanochtend weggegeven ook aan een vriend die pas vader geworden was.  Nu nadenken over hoe ik de babyquilt ga quilten. Eerst maar naar Amstelveen om tussenvulling te kopen.

Tomorrow this miniquilt  (23x23 inch) will be hanging on the wall of the babyroom of a good friend.
Just stitch in the ditch. I like the funny color accents in the binding.

I can fmq this quilt. I still have to sew the eyes.

I did not like piecing, but as always, when you learn something and you have rewarding results it is a joy to do. I like to do things quick, but that is not possible when you are piecing. It is fun when the block is (almost) perfect. So I can understand now why piecing is fun too and I will piece more often.
I thought a lot about how to quilt this quilt and did not want to dense quilting. The design is called 'Elephantparade'. After an elephantparade there are a lot of elephant footprnts, so the design for the quilting needs elephant footprints.

Ik vond het naaien van blokken een corvee, maar zoals altijd als je ets vaak doet en het resultaat je plezier geeft, wordt het leuk om te doen. I wil altijd graag snel dingen doen, maar dat lukt niet met het naaien van blokken en het is leuk als een blok (bijna) perfect is met passende puntjes. Ik snap nu waarom iemand het leuk vindt om blokken te naaien en ik ga het ook vaker doen.
Ik heb lang nagedacht over het quilten van dit quilt. Het ontwerp van het quilt heet 'Olifantenparade' en na zo'n parade heb je veel pootafdrukken van de olifanten, dat wil ik terug laten komen in het quilten.

It is nice sunny weather, not too cold. I saw a little coot, so I think it is almost spring again!!

Het weer is zonning en niet te koud. I zag al een jonge meerkoetje. Het is bijna lente!!!

Piecing elephants

I need two baby quilts.  I need one for a friend who helped me. Another one will be for the son of a dear friend. She was my neihtbour when our children were todlers. So our children played together for years.  The son lost a baby and now they have a healthy girl, but his wife is ill.  I think an unexpected elephant babyguilt will do some good. That is the reason why I quilt along with the Elephant Parade van SewFreshQuilt. I loved the Elehant Parade design and want some exesice in piecing.

Ik heb twee baby quilts nodig. Een voor een vriend die me geholpen heeft. En nog een voor de zoon van een goede vriendin. Ze woonde naast me toen de kinderen klein waren en de kinderen hebben veel samen gespeeld. De zoon heeft een baby verloren. Zij zijn na een angstige zwangerschap ouders van een gezonde dochter, maar nu is zijn vrouw ziek. Ik wil hem opvrolijken met een quilt van zijn vroegere buurvrouw. Dat verwacht hij vast niet.  Omdat ik ook meer ervaring wil hebben met het naaien van blokken doe ik mee aan de Olifantenparade Quilt along van SewFreshQuilt. Ik vind het een prachtig en vrolijk ontwerp ook nog!

I have a bit of a ADHD type, I think. It is difficult for me to focus. It drives my family crazy, because I am looking half of my life for things I get lost the other  half of my life. By impulsive behaviour I broke three times a leg and when I was a child I had six times a concussion. I really want my keys at the same place when I arrive at home, but as soon as I am through the door something attracts my attention and I forget my keys.....

It is a pity that I need focussing whenI am piecing small and big elephants. First af all focussing when cutting the fabric the right sizes and the right colors and sewing the right pieces together on the richt way!!!! I never knew I could make so many mistakes. For instance:  I cutted fabric  for 28 small elephants, but when I finished there were 24 elephants, 16 to the right and 8 to the left! Of course there were some bits and pieces next to my piles with elephants. So stupid, but I really tried to focus!  Piecing is not my cup of tea!!And pick out stichches neither. But no matter how long it takes, I will finish the elephant parade. The piles of big and small elephants make me proud.

I geloof dat ik een beetje ADHD typetje ben. Ik vind het moeilijk om me te concentreren, hoe hard ik het ook probeer. Mijn familie wordt er gek van. Ik heb door impulsief gedrag drie keer een been gebroken en als kind zes keer een hersenschudding gehad. Ik zoek bijvoorbeeld altijd naar mijn sleutels. Ik denk weleens dat ik de ene  helft van mijn leven zoek, naar dingen die ik de andere helft van mijn leven kwijt maak Ik wil echt mijn sleutels steeds op dezelfde plaats leggen als ik thuis kom, maar zodra ik de deur in ben, trekt iets anders mijn aandacht en dan weet ik niet meer waar ik mijn sleutels neerleg ..... 

Maar je aandacht erbij houden is wel nodig als je lapjes aan elkaar naait. Er gaat zoveel fout als je niet oplet. Bij het knippen en naaien van de olifanten ging ook alles fout. Ik heb bijvoorbeeld 28 kleine olifanten geknipt, maar eindigde met 24 olifanten (16 naar rechts en 8 naar links!) en een hoop lapjes. Die lapjes aan elkaar naaien is niet 'mijn ding! Naden uithalen ook niet trouwens. Maar ik zal toch de olifantenparade afmaken en twee mooie baby quilts maken. Ik kan toch ook wel trots naar die stapels grote en kleine olifanten kijken.

They want eyes!!!!

I love free motion quilting. I love the sound of the machine and you need a different kind of focus. I like the way my thoughts wander in all kind of directions when it is easy and it is not difficult for me to focus when I need too. It is a bit like meditating. I love to do it after a busy day. So I left the piecing a few days and will free motion a sampler. I wanted to piece the front of a cushion, but after the elphants  I let my machine and the thread do the work. I use the machine of my daughter, because I still not have my machine back from the dealer. 

My sketchbook-book arrived and I will use it for the design of the quilt. So many creative ideas in the book!

Ik hou van quilten uit de vrije hand. Je hebt daar een andere concentratie bij nodig dan bij het naaien van lapjes, Ik hou van het geluid van de machine en mijn gedachten dwalen alle kanten op terwijl ik stik. Maar als het nodig is, kan ik me makkelijk concentreren, een soort mediteren is het voor mij. Ik wordt er rustig van. Ik doe het ook graag na een drukke dag. Daarom ga ik na mijn olifanten maar een proefquiltje maken. Ik wilde de voorkant eerst van kleine lapjes maken, maar na de olifanten doe ik dat maar niet. Ik laat de machine en het draad het werk doen. Omdat ik mijn machine nog niet terug heb van de dealer, gebruik ik de naaimachine van mijn dochter. Het boek met inspiratie heb ik ontvangen en dat ga ik zeker bij het quilten gebruiken. Het boek is echt inspirerend.

Time to enjoy a dinner at the waterfront!

After a few cooler days it is summer again in The Netherlands.
Yesterday night we had diner at the waterfront on a terrace of a very old cafe   'Het sluisje' (The little Lock). The cafe is more than 100 years old, next to a very old lock in a canal: one of the most beautiful places in Amsterdam. The street is on a very old, miles and miles long dike with many old, beautiful houses. It is a five minutes walk from our house to get there. When it is nice weather and we have dinner friends who like to walk, we go with them after a walk to this place for a drink.

I did not have much time to sew. So a only finished a giraffe doll quilt for my granddaughter Salijn, who is in the country again after holidays in France with her parents. I am always glad when my children return from their holidays! I did onbly stitching in the ditch, to keep the fleece back of the quilt soft.

The doll quilt is made with the same giraffe pattern as the giraffe quilt for the baby of my husbands sun and daughter in law. Next week both pattern are on my blog.

Another finish is a sampler with hyper quilting. Of course it will be used as a place mat.

This month I have a weekend with four friends from high school. We are four old ladies now. we all went to university, divorced after a long marriage, just retired and I am the only grandma! I like to give them a present so I have to sew eight samplers like this. So I can practice hyper and micro quilting a lot! I tried a new filler: double micro stippling with two colors. It looks nice, but I have to work on the pattern a little.
