FMQ coffeebeans/koffiebonen free pattern

I love coffee, micro free motion quilting and I love to make miniquilts/placemats to give to friends. I collected a lot of pins with funny paintings and sayings about coffee. I combine all these to sew 'coffee' placemats. For these placemats I designed a coffebeans filler and coffeebean loop.

Pattern placemat (finshed size: 45 cm/32 cm)        Patroon placemat (45 cm x 32 cm)

Fabric: 4x 18x12,5 inch  (48cm/35 cm)
Batting:  18 inch/12,5 inch (48 cm/35 cm)
Binding:  75 inch x 2.25 inch (1,70 cm x 4,5 cm)


1. Sandwich the placemats
2. Draw with chalk the pattern on top fabric.
    If nescesary copy and paste the patterns in a document, enlarge it and print it.
3. Quilt coffeebeansfiller in the letters, coffeecup and 'smell'.
4. Guilt the coffeebean loop around the letters and coffeecup.
5. Square the sandwich 18 inch/12,5 inch (48 cm / 35 cm)
6. Finish the placemat with the binding.

My challenge #3 Tutorial FMQ Gingko leaves presents

How to sew Gingko leaves freehand.

When you add some gingko leaves to your fmq samples you have beautiful presents for your family and friends. They love them in every color combination! To fmq a gingko leave you need to know something of the anatomy of this characteristic leaves.

1. The anatomy of a gingko leave

• The leaves of the Ginkgo are remarkable for the fan of simple, forked veins. The veins are slightly raised and give a ribbed appearance to the foliage.

When you look well at the veins you see they are forked and not branched

• Most of the gingko leaves are notched with a deep slit in the middle.

• Elongated petiola as long as the foliage with a little knot at the end.

2. Freehand gingko leaves
The shape of the leave and the ribbed foliage, made the gingko leave easy for freee motion quilting.  Look well at the pictures of some gingko leaves. Look at the veins. the shape of the petiola and the foliage. You find much more drawings and pictures of gingko leaves here.

• Draw some freehand gingko leaves on paper. Draw untill you know you can easy draw the leaves.
• Sandwich your sampler for a fmq filler.
• Choose a dark, medium and light thread of the same color.
• Before you free motion quilt the filler on your sampler, you need to embroider the gingko leaves. Decide where you want to sew the gingko leaves on your sampler.
• If nescesary mark with five dots the place where you want to sew a gingko leave like in the picture below.

       

• FMQ the contour of a gingko leave with the darkest color. The slit is always right above the petiola. Sew a little knob at the end of the petiola.
  Sew the contour a second time.

•  Sew with the same color veins and ends in the knob.

• Sew with the medium color veins. Starts at mark A and finish in A.

•  Sew with the light color veins. Starts at mark A and finish in A.

• After finishing your gingko leaves: free motion quilt the filler or fillers on your sampler. 
• Square your sampler and bind it with fabric in a color which matches your gingko leaves.

3. Presents from your samplers

4. Different shades of gingko leaves in one color. 

The sampler with blue gingko leaves has laeves in three shades of blue. To embroider these you need threads in four shades of blue: dark (D), medium dark (MD), medium (M), medium light(ML), light(L) and white (W).

Use for the darkest shade of leaves: D, MD and M thread.

Use for the medium shade of leaves: MD, ML and L thread.

Use for the lightest shade of leaves: ML, L and W thread.

Free pattern: Giraffe baby quilt with bells in horns and rustling ears.

This quilt is not my idea. I found a picture at about com. It is from Bonnie Sneed. I made the pattern and add bells in the horns and rustle plastic in the soft, flappy ears.


Het ontwerp is van Bonnie Sneed. Ik heb er bellen in de hoorns en knisperende oren aan toegevoegd.

Finished size 32" x 40"       80cm/100 cm

Time to sew: 4-6 hour.       Tijd: 4-6 uur

The quilt is a applique giraffe with flappy inner ears, flappy horns and hair between the horns. A small sashing of 1 inch, a 4 inch border with corners.

Het quilt is een geappliceerde giraf met knisperende binnenoren en hoorns met een belletje erin.

Ingredients:
Back: 1 yard blue fleece

Blue: 25 inch

Giraf print: fat quarter

Pantherprint: 0,25 yard

Monkey print: fat quarter

Scraps: soft white for ears and horns, black cotton for eyes, sand colored for snout.

Some threads for 'hair'

Two small, round metal bells and some rustle plastic 

Instructions: 

Cut the fabrics

Blue:  one piece 22,5  x 30,5 and four pieces 4,5" square

Panter print: sashing  

• two pieces 22,5" x 1,5",
• two pieces 40" x 1,5",
• four pieces 4,5" x 1,5",

                     binding:  4,3 yard (1,5 or 2 inch width)

Monkey print: 2 pieces 4,5" x 22,5 "

                        2 pieces 4,5" x 30,5 "

Top:

2. Sew the 22,5" sashing strips to the top and bottom of the blue fabric block.

3. Sew the 22,5" border to top and bottom of the top.
4. Sew 40" sashing strips to the long sides of the top.
5. Sew 4,5" width border (blue square - 4,5" sashing strip - 30,5 " monkey strip -  4,5" sashing strip - blue square. (2x)
6. Sew the borders to the long sides of the top.

Applique
7. Print out the giraffe picture and enlarge with a photo copier or draw a giraffe
    on paper.
    Your giraffe is big enough when the ears are partly on the monkey border.
    Height with horns about 32", 26" width.

8. Cut out the pieces of the giraffe, both white inner ears two times and horn
    four times.

5. Sew withe ears together and turn. Fill with a some rustle plastic. 

6. Sew horns, turn and fill with batting and a small metal bell.

7. Pin all parts of the giraffe on the top.
    The horns, hair and ears 1/4 inch under the hat.

8. Use a satin stitch or zigzag (width 3) to sew the parts on the top. Use for the
    eyes black  thread and give the eyes a twinkle with  some white stitches.
    Do not applique the horns and white ears. They are fixed to the top when you
    stitch the hat on the top. 
9. Sew the mouth, nose and stripes on the snouth with a satin or zigzag stitch     
    (wdth 2)

9. Sandwich your guilt, quilt it and bind it.

Back: 1 yard blue fleece

Blue: 25 inch

Giraf print: fat quarter

Pantherprint: 0,25 yard

Monkey print: fat quarter

Scraps soft white fabric for ears and horns and scraps of black cotton for eyes, scrap of sand colored cotton for mouth)

Some threads for 'hair'

Two small, round metal bells and some rustle plastic

1. Snijden van stoffen

Blauw: rechthoek 22.5 inch x 30,5 inch en vier blokken 4,5 inch x 4,5 inch

Panter print: stroken 1.5 inch

• 2 x 22,5 inch
• 2 x 40 inch
• 4x 4,5 inch
• 150 inch (1,5 of 2 inch breed) voor de rand.

Apen print: 2 stroken 4,5 inch x 22,5 inch

2 strokes 4,5 inch x 30,5 inch

2. Naai de top.

   -  Naai eerst panter stroken en apen stroken van 22,5 inch langs de lange kant
      aan elkaar. (2x)
   -  Naai deze met de stroken aan de kortaan de korte zijde van de blauwe 
      rechthoek.
   -  Naai de panterstrook van 40 inch aan de lange zijde van de top. (2x)
   -  Naai 4,5 inch brede stroken aan elkaar in de volgorde: blauw, panter, apen,
      panter, blauw. (2x))
   -  Naai de  de verkregen strook langs de lange zijde van de top. (2x)

3. Print de giraf uit en vergroot de print met het kopieerapparaat of teken de
    giraf na op de gewenste grootte  (ongeveer 32 inch lang en 26 inch breed)
    De oren vallen gedeeltelijk op de rand.

4. Knip de delen van de giraf uit. 

5. Leg patroondeeltjes op de stof en knip uit. 
    Knip de witte oren en hoorns dubbel. 
    Knip de snuit ook eenmaal uit de tussenvulling.
    Let op knip toeslag: oren en  hoorns 0,5 inch aan zijde die aan het hoofd komt,
    hoofd 0,5 inch toeslag aan zijde die onder de snuit komt, nek 0,5 inch toeslag
    aan boven en onderkant.

5. Naai de twee delen van de witte oren op elkaar, keer ze en vul met wat 
    knisper plastic. Oren moeten plat blijven.

6. Naai de twee delen van de hoorns op elkaar en keer ze. Doe wat tussenvulling
    om de belletjes stop dit in de oren en vul de hoorns verder op.

7. Speld de delen van de giraf op de top. Oren, nek, hoorns, haar en ogen 0,5
    inch onder de kop, kop 0,5 inch onder de snuit, nek 0,5 inch onder de snuit en
    over de panter rand.
    Leg onder de snuit de snuit van vulling.

8. Torn de naad tussen panter rand en blauwe rechthoek los op de plaats van de |   nek en naai de rand met de nek er tussen weer aan het vierkant vast. 
9. Gebruik een satijn- of zigzagsteek (steekbreedte 3) om de kop op de top te
    appliceren. Gebruik voor de ogen zwart draad en steekbreedte 2.
    De witte oren en hoorns worden vast gestikt met het appliceren van de kop.

10. Naai neus, lippen en streep in de snuit met een satijn of zigzagsteek.
      Steekbreedte 2    

11. Sandwich de top en back met de tussen vulling.
12. Naai zo dicht mogelijk langs de giraf met een rachte steek de sandwich door.
      (zo komt de giraf mooi vlak te liggen)
13. Quilt met een meandermotief de sandwich door. Quilt om de applicatie heen.

Finishes and a challenge for this year: 26 fmq tutorials!

My challenge

Some quilting friends ask me to write tutorials for the gifts I make out of fmq samplers. I am a teacher and teachers like to share knowledge. So I like the tutorial idea. To share knowledge I must gather knowledge and practice to know what is worth sharing and what is not. I also like blogs with challenges. So I will combine a challenge with the request of my friends.
My challenge for this year: every two weeks a tutorial for a small project to practice your fmq skills with pictures of the finished project. So I had at least  to finish at least 26 fmq projects too!

Finishes

I have been busy this week with quilting and blogging and finished some  projects. It was very, very hot in The Nertherlands so the sewing machine and lap top were on my balcony the whole week!We will have dinner with friends to night on our balcony, so to day I am busy with cleaning the house, shopping and preparing dinner. Tomorrow  my sewing machine is back on the balcony again!

Finish #1

This week I finished two mug rugs with the same hyper quilted flowers of  place mats I sew two weeks ago for a dear friend. I made the mug rugs and place mats to practice hyper quilting and (micro) fillers. Of course also to practice my binding! The mug rugs have 7! very nice mitered corners and 1 a little bit less nice, but much better than the binding of the place mats two weeks ago. Next time binding had to be perfect!
I shoot pictures of my quilting and make sketches, so I have the first tutorial for my  challenge! As a bonus I posted the tutorial for the matching place mats.

Finish #2

I do not like stippling, only micro stippling. To exercise another meandering filler, I made four samplers. And of course I made place mats out of them for friends. After binding the samplers, I googled pictures of their tableware and used the shapes on their plates, cups and saucers for the thread play on the place mats. I started this project three weeks ago when we had a barbecue in their garden, but I did not finish in time.
Next time we have dinner at their place will be after this summer, but I do not have to worry about the present this time!

The pattern of the quilting: for every double circle 2-3 small circles and 2-3 curves

 . 

The pattern is my own design but I am sure it is not unique and somewhere else designed by another quilter.

#3(Only seven finished yet!)

 I made some coasters of the pile with mini samplers of the free motion quilting projectof Leah Day. I used tricot bias from the market. Need to buy some more to finish them all.

Finish #4 Six postcards

Postcards out of sampler for my Look #2: At the beach, wall hanging
I collected a lot of pictures of shells and things you would find on the beach on Pinterest. I draw shells and mini shell fillers on paper and made a sampler to see which quilted patterns on which scale are strong enough to use for my wall hanging.
I made six postcards out of the sampler. Two with feathers just for fun.
First time my Husqvarna stitch a decent satin stitch! (Don tell it to anyone: I think I was the problem and not my Husqvarna.) Love the binding with the different colors of the thread.

Still there are WIP's and I found another UFO

1. some Posting the Giraffe pattern. (next week)
2. Look #2: At the beach(busy with samplers and drawing patterns)
3. A doll quilt for my granddaughter Salijn. (this weekend)
4. A dress for Sascha and Sarah (Next week, Sarah I want to finish it before tuesday)
5. I already pieced the top of two ladders and snakes play quilts for my granddaughters. I want to applique the snakes, ladders and numbers. Also two big dices. The play quilts must be ready before their birthdays in Augustus and September. (One finished first week of august (Salijn's birthday) and the other one first week of September (Sascha's birthday)
6. Two more red place mats for my daughter in law. So I can give it to her the next time we go to see them. (next week)
7. The fabrics for two more Balloon baby quilts are cut weeks ago. This week one finish. The one I will give to my youngest daughter when she finally can tell me she is pregnant. (finished within three months)
8. There is another UFO. I started piecing this quilt, a double wedding ring, before I discovered fmq. It is a picnic quilt for my eldest daughter.

Tutorial placemats with hyperquilted flower.

Tutorial


Hyperquilting is fun to do en gives beautiful  effects like this hyper quilted flower in three colours.
Instead of sewing samplers I like to sew gifts for family and friends like place mats and mug jugs. I few days after sewing these place mats  a friend used them on her breakfast table. A present for her birthday.

Finished size: 13 inch x 19 inch inch

You need white cotton for top and back, batting or flannel, a fat quarter colored fabric for the binding and thread in matching colors. One or two green colors thread for some leaves around the flowers.
I use 40 wt polyester (Brildor) but rayon embroidery thread gives beautiful flowers to.

1. Cut the cotton and batting (14 inch x 20 inch) and make a sandwich with pins.

    (The sandwich is after quilting slightly smaller)

2. Cut 1,5 inch strips for the binding and find thread in matching colors.
3. Mark the places for the centers of the flowers.

4. Practice the pattern of the flower on paper.  Start in the center with a spiral and draw petals around the spiral. The size and form of petals may slighty differ. Do the same with each color and finish with filling the center spiral with yellow circles.

5. Stitch your flower in the same order as drawn in the picture.
When you do not have problems with the tension of your thread you can use white thread in the bobbin. Otherwise you need the match the color in the bobbin.
Snap your threads when you start and end with a color. Because of the heavy stitching in the center of the flower you can snap your threads without bury them with a knot.

6. Practice if necessary your leaves on paper. You can alter the scale if you want. Mark if necessary the places where you want to stitch your leaves and stitch the leaves in green. 
7. Free motion quilt around the flower a filler with a white thread.
When you have made the mug jugs you can stitch the same filler, but on a bigger scale.
If you  have no experience with the filler or the scale of the filler, practice the pattern in the desired scale on paper.


8. Sqaure the sandwich to 13 inch by 19 inch and finish it with the binding.

Tutorial: Mug rugs and place mats with hyperquilted flower

Finished size: 5 inch square

You need scraps of white cotton, batting or flannel, scraps for the binding and thread in matching colors. I use 40 wt polyester (Brildor) but cotton or rayon embroidery thread gives beautiful flowers to.

It is easier to move a bigger square round the needle, so it is better to quilt your mug rugs in one piece. So I cut a 6 inch square for one,  a 12 inch x 6 inch piece for two and a 12 inch square for four mug jugs. slightly smaller.

 

2. Cut 1,5 inch strips for the binding and find thread in matching colors.

3. Make a sandwich with pins, mark 6 inch squares and the middle of each square.

4. Practice the pattern of the flower on paper.  Start in the center with a spiral and draw petals around the spiral. The size and form of petals may slighty differ. Do the same with each color and finish with filling the center spiral with yellow circles.

5. Stitch your flower in the same order as drawn in the picture.
When you do not have problems with the tension of your thread you can use white thread in the bobbin. Otherwise you need the match the color in the bobbin.

Tip: Pebbling looks better if you stitch every circle twice or thrice

7. Cut the sandwich in 5 x 5 inch square mug jugs.

 8. Finish your mug rug with the binding.

Machinequilten FMQ 2: Wat is absoluut nodig voor machine quilten?

Toen ik een half jaar terug begon met free motion quilten, schrok ik van wat er allemaal nodig was volgens de vele experts op Internet. Ook op een workshop met met drang allerlei hulpmiddelen aangeraden, die daar te duur konden worden aangeschaft. Quiltspullen zijn niet goedkoop.
Ik krijg altijd wantrouwen als ik zie dat degenen die hulpmiddelen aanraden  deze zelf verkopen. Voor mij is het dan een sport om te ondervinden wat echt nodig is en wat niet. Voor ik dure dingen aanschaf voor een hobby, wil ik wel weten of het een hobby blijft.

Ik kan tot nu toe prima machine quilten met alleen mijn eenvoudige naaimachine en een universeel meandervoetje. Alleen dit voetje heb ik extra aangeschaft. Zo quiltte ik een king size quilt, wandquilts, tafellopers, poppenquilts, boxkleden, placemats en kaarten om te versturen.

Deze wholeclothe (1m x 1 m) heb ik gequild met mijn Husqvarna. Ik heb geen andere hulpmiddelen gebruikt dan mijn meandervoetje.

Ook deze King Size quilt met 425 verschillende patronen is in vijf stroken van een halve meter breed en 2,5 m lang gequild zonder quilttafel of andere hulpmiddelen.

Wat je dus absoluut nodig hebt om te quillten zijn: 

1.  Een naaimachine die een rechte steek kan stikken!
Er zijn quiltsters die op een oude Singer naaimachine prachtig quilten en er zijn quiltsters die op een dure Bernina met een steeklengteregelaar net zo prachtig quilten.
Zelf quilt ik op mijn Husqvarna Emerald 183. Een eenvoudige machine, waarmee ik wel de snelheid aan kan passen. Dat regelen van de snelheid is met mijn machine erg handig, want met de pedaal is het met mijn machine heel langzaam of veel te snel.
Handig is ook dat ik kan instellen dat als ik stop met naaien de naald in mijn werk steekt. Zo zal het werk bij het herschikken van mijn sandwich of het verplaatsen van mijn handen niet verschuiven en daarmee een grote lelijke steek maken.

2. Een meander/borduurvoet.(darningvoet)

Als de naald in het werk wordt gestoken, drukt dit voetje op de sandwich. Als de naald omhoog gaat, gaat ook het voetje omhooog en kan de sandwich verschoven worden. Je zou zonder voetje kunnen free motion quilten, maar dan zijn je vingers niet beschermd tegen de naald!
Het voetje kan erg piepen. Zodra ik dat hoor, doe ik  een druppel naaimachine-olie op een doekje en ga daarmee over de veer en de pen.

Op Internet zijn goede universeelvoetjes te krijgen als alternatief voor de soms dure merkvoetjes. Ik kocht dit voetje voor 15 euro. Het voetje bevalt me tot nu toe prima. Mocht je af en toe spullen in Amerika bestellen: daar verkopen ze deze voetjes voor 7-8 dollar!


Ik weet nu welke hulpmiddelen ik graag zou willen gebruiken en waarom. De meeste spullen zijn duur en op internet heb ik alternatieven gevonden voor de vaak veel te dure producten. Ideeën bedacht en vaak zelf gemaakt door andere quiltsters op Internet. In een volgend bericht vertel ik hierover.

Machinequilten (FMQ) 1: Free motion quilten op de naaimachine

Waarom naaimachine quilten en waarom deze serie berichten?

Ik kijk met bewondering naar mensen die met de hand een quilt doorquilten en daar enthousiast over kunnen zijn. Het quilten met de hand geeft prachtige quilts, maar ik heb er het geduld niet voor.
Het quilten met de machine ziet er anders maar ook prachtig uit, maar degenen die mijn quilts krijgen weten niet eens wat quilten is, laat staan dat ze het verschil zien!
De reden waarom ik graag quilt op de machine is denk ik dezelfde als waarom handquilters graag quilten. Heerlijk geconcentreerd bezig zijn met je handen em daarbij praten met anderen of heerlijk met je gedachten wegdromen. Overdag zit mijn man vaak met zijn computer aan de andere hoek van onze lange tafel! Ik geniet van zijn gezelschap maar ook van de patronen die ik naai met vooral het free motion quilten. Ik hou van het geluid van de naaimachine bij het quilten en de rust die het me geeft. Ik krabbelde altijd op papier, nu krabbel ik op textiel.

Na heel veel uren oefenen: mijn eerste whole cloth: free motion quilten met micropatronen en hyperquilten (35x40 inch). Het begon met de gehyperquilte verenhart in het midden. Daarna kwam het microquilten daaromheen. Alleen de vorm het hart was getekend,, de rest ontstond al naaiend.
Uren plezier achter de naaimachine met mooie kleuren garen. En, zoals u aan het detail op de achtergrond van dit blog kan zien, de steekjes zien er aardig uit!

Ik heb veel informatie verzameld op veel Engelstalige websites en kennis gemaakt met geweldige artiesten en hun technieken en kom er steeds meer tegen! Zij maken prachtige quilts met technieken die iets toevoegen aan het machinequilten. Vaak grenzen de technieken aan borduren of threadpainting. Ik heb veel geleerd en leer nog steeds bij door nog meer te surfen op Internet, tutorials uit te voeren, online lessen te volgen, blogs te lezen en vele fimpjes te bekijken en te shoppen bij andere kunstvormen voor inspiratie.
Ik heb inmiddels een serie boeken en oefen veel. Ik heb op Pinterest veel patronen en voorbeelden verzameld en teken en krabbel veel patronen bij het tv kijken of op andere 'verloren momenten'.
Ik heb veel informatie opgezocht op Internet. Alles wat je moet weten voor het machinequilten vind je daar. Maar op internet staat ook veel onzin omdat experts/artiesten gesponsord worden en vaak zelf verkopen. Ook nemen sommige bloggers klakkeloos informatie over.
Ik heb ook cursussen gevolgd, maar ook dan is de informaie niet altijd juist,  onvolledig. Mij werd ook daar van alles aangepraat, wat ik nog altijd niet mis of nodig heb. Wat ik er kon kopen was achteraf veel te duur. Ik heb geld over voor mijn hobby, maar heb te vaak spullen aangeschaft die te duur waren of die ik nooit heb gebruikt. 
In dit blog wil ik verslag doen van mijn zoektocht naar kennis en informatie over het machine quilten en in het bijzonder het free motion quilten.
Wat je ook aanschaft voor het machinequilten, hoeveel cursussen je ook volgt en hoeveel informattie je ook leest op internet en in boeken, je leert het alleen door te oefenen, oefenen, oefenen ........

Een van mijn eerste oefeningen: stipling. Daarna heb ik nog heel veel moeten oefenen voor ik mijn eerste whole clothe kon maken.

Een van mijn eerste berichten in deze serie zal dan ook gaan over hoe je kunt oefenen en hoe je op verloren momenten kunt oefenen, zelfs als je niet achter da machine zit. Ook geef ik je tips hoe je van oefenmateriaal leuke kadoś maakt.
