Still busy with Matisse. The above collage is called 'Snail' and is a hugh collage: 110 x 110 inch! I have a book for my grandchildren. It explains with a lot of pictures why and how Matisse made his cut out collages. There are a few pictures of a snail. The snail disappaers at the end of the book, because Matisse says:"I do not want the snail in my collage. I am the snail and my hospital bed is my house" I thought the cut out snail in the book was made by Matisse, but the author of the book made that cut out. The only snail Matisse made is the collage above!  I loved the snail of the book so much, so I made min's with the snail.

Nog steeds druk met Matisse.  Bovenstaande collage van Matisse heet: "Slak". Ik heb een boek van het Stedelijk Museum voor mijn kleinkinderen. In het boek wordt uitgelegd hoe en waarom Matisse zijn knipselcollages maakte. In het verhaal komen afbeeldingen van een geknipte slak voor. De slak verdwijnt aan het eind van het boek. Matisse zegt, dat de slak weg moet, omdat hij zelf de slak is met zijn ziekenhuisbed als huis. Ik dacht echt dat Matisse de slak zelf geknipt had, maar hij heeft alleen bovenstaande slak gemaakt . Ik vond de slak van het boek zo mooi, dat ik toch mini's van heb gemaakt.

When I was browsing for more snails  by Matisse, I could not find anyone. The only snail made by Matisse is the above big, big collage. Now I realise that is why the snail in the book had to disappear before Matisse finished the collage! Too late I made two more 'Matisse snail' mini's!!

Toen ik naar meer afbeeldingen van slakken van Matisse zocht,, kon ik er geen vinden, behalve de enorme collage hieirboven, die Matisse 'Slak'noemde. Nu realiseer ik me dat dat de reden is, waarom de slak in het boek moet verdwijnen voor Matisse zijn collage in het boek af had!!! Te laar! Ik heb al twee andere Matisse slakmini's gemaakt.

I promished a follower to test the mice patterns for my owl quilt. I printed the patterns for 4 inch blocks. So these mini's were the last Matisse mini's for a while. I want to applique Betty Boops too!

Ik heb een volger beloofd de muizen patronen voor de uil quilt te testen. Ik heb depatronen uitgeprint voor blokken van 4 inch. Daarom zijn deze Matisse mini's voorlopig de laatste. Ik wil ook Betty Boops appliqueren.

Matisse again: His parakeet

Inspired by Matisse's Parakeet

It was fun to participate in the Art blog hop of Alida of Tweety loves quilting blog.  I saw art pieces of  'fiber artists' and even laughed with Betty Boop. For me the perfect finish and a sign to take it not too seriously.

Het was leuk om deel te nemen aan de Kunst blog hop van Alida's: Tweety loves quilting blog. Ik zag prachtige quiltjes van 'textiel kunstenaressen' en heb zelfs gelachen om de bijdrage van Joan met Betty Boop. Voor mij was dat de perfecte afsluiting van de blog hop. Het was voor mij een teken alles niet te serieus te nemen.

It was fun to see that more quilters are inspired by Matisse and they have their own interpretations. So beautiful!!
It has been a busy twoo weeks with little Kate in hospital again. She is all right now, so when my two eldest granddaughters were with us last weekend, little Kate stayed the night as well! All three granddaughters together. That does not happen often.
When Kate was asleep, I read with my two eldest granddaughters in a book for children about Matisse: The Parakeet, the mermaid and the snail. It is about how Matisse made this art pieces and what happened with the snail. At the end of the book, the snail disappears and Matisse says: No snail, I am the snail and my bed is the house on my back! I love the shapes of  the parakeet, the snail and the apples. So I have to cut parakeets out of my paper piecing testing fabrics, So far I finished two mini's.


Het was leuk om te zien dat meerdere quilters geinspireerd zijn door Matisse en hun interpretaties te zien. Prachtig. De afsluiting van de week met Betty Boop was perfect. Een teken om het allemaal niet te serieus te nemen.
Het waren twee drukke weken met kleine Kate weer even in het ziekenhuis. Het gaat weer goed met haar. Toen vorig weekend mijn twee oudste kleindochters bij me waren heeft ze zelfs hier een nachtje geslapen! Toen ze sliep, las ik met mijn twee oudsten het boek  De parkiet, de zeemeermin en de slak voor. Het boek legt hun uit hoe hij Matisse zijn collages maakte en wat er met de slak gebeurd is. De slak verdwijnt aan het eind van het boek, omdat Matisse zegt: Ik ben de slak en het bed is een huis om mijn rug.
Ik vind de vormen van de parkiet, the appels en de slakken zo mooi dat ik deze vormen geknipt hebt uit de lapjes waar ik normaal mijn paper piecing patronen mee test. Tot nu toe heb ik twee mini's gemaakt.

Matisse: The pitcher and the knives

Last summer there was an exhibition with collages of the paper cuts of the  French artist Henri Matisse.  You saw posters with his collage 'The Oasis' all over Amsterdam.  I was impressed and inspired by his work and made for my sketchbook a few mini's with his bright colors.
When Alida asked me to participate in her 'Art with Fabric blog hop'  I knew the artist would be Matisse again. His paper cut outs are so colorful and fun! I love the shapes, the colors and compositions of his collages.

Vorig jaar zomer was er een tentoonstelling van de knipselcollages van Henri Matisse. In heel Amsterdam hingen posters van zijn kleurrijke collage: Oase. Je kon het niet missen. Ik was geinspireerd door zijn werk en maakte verschillende mini;s voor mijn schetsboek. Toen Alida mij vroeg deel te nemen aan haar  'Art with fabric blog hop' was het voor mij duidelijk dat de artiest weer Matisse zou zijn. Ik hou van de kleuren, vormen en composities van zijn collages.

I am 'pleasant addicted' to paper piecing, but Matisse is for me raw edge applique and free motion quilting. I love the shapes of the pitcher and the woman. These shapes  are so strong! I used them for two mini's. Matisse used to dye his sheets of paper, so I used 'home dyed' fabric scraps. With a blanket stitch I aplliqued the pink pitcher, but for me that is not Matisse style. The purple woman is appliqued with three lines of straight stitches, for me that's more Matisse. I decided to embroider the plants. The fmq pattern is a meandering with Matisse plants. The size of the plants are not equal, just like Matisse's cut outs.

Ik ben prettig verslaafd aan paper piecing, maar Matisse is voor mij raw edge appliceren  en quilten uit de vrije hand.  Ik vind de vormen van de messenwerper en de vrouw zo sterk in deze collage daarom gebruikte ik ze voor twee mini's. Matisse verfde de blaadjes waaruit hij de vormen knipte zelf en ik gebruikte katoen dat ik zelf geverfd heb uit mijn doos met restjes. De rose werper heb ik met een festonsteek genaaid, maar dat vind ik toch niet typisch Matisse. De paarse vrouw heb ik met drie lijnen rechte steken vastgestikt en dat is meer Matisse. Het quilten is een soort meanderen met plant figuren van Matisse in verschillende grootte, zoals ook de plantjes op dit werk van Matisse.

Combinations of plants and other shapes of cut outs make beautiful fms too. You find them in this Matisse post with other Matisse's mini's. I always try to find shapes when I look to quilts with meandering. That is why I try to sew meandering with mtching shapes when I quilt.

Combinaties van Matisse's planten en andere knipselvormen geven ook prachtige patronen om uit de vrije hand te quilten, Ik gebruikte deze voor Matisse mini's in dit bericht. Ik vind het altijd leuk om in en quilt allerlei vormen te ontdekken  Daarom probeer ik altijd bijpassende vormen in mijn meander patronen te verstoppen.

Sketchbook: Matisse FMQ meander patterns

Last summer I made quilts for my sketchbook. I wanted a book with different designs and techniques. The theme 'circles' were mini's with embroidered circles. The theme Matisse were mini's with raw edge applique inspired by the collages with paper cut outs of the French painter Matisse. For the 'Art with fabric blog hop' of Alida (starting the 8th of May) I looked at the mini's and saw the Matisse fillers again. The shappes of his paper cut outs are perfect for quilting fmq fillers. Lovely meandering combined with Matisse shapes like apples, plants. birds ....

Vorig jaar maakte ik  mini quilts voor mijn schetsboek. Ik wilde een boek maken met verschillende ontwerpen en technieken, dat ik door kon bladeren. Voor het thema cirkels borduurde ik met de machine allerlei verschillende cirkels. Voor het thema Matisse maakte ik mini's met dezelfde vormen als de cut outs van Matisse, waar vorig jaar een grote tentoonstelling was in Amsterdam. Voor de 'Art with fabric blog hop' van Alida bladerde ik door mijn schetsboek en vond ik de de meander patronen voor quilten uit de vrije hand weer. De vormen van de knipsels die Matisse in zijn collages gebruikt, (planten, appels, vogels) zijn fijn om uit de vrije hand te quilten. Perfecte vullers voor de negatieve  ruimte van een quilt.

Matisse mini

What seems to be a flue was a pneumonia. I always go to the dokter a little too late. A friend told me, that some of her friends did not recover of a flue and suffered a pneunomia. I did not believe I had a pneumonia, but finally I went to the doctor and she gave me medication. I never knew coughing could be so painfull!!! With the medication I am recovering well and quick. It is nice to have a reason to be in bed when you are so tired. My daughters and husband were so kind for me and now I am almost recovered. Tomorrow I will spent the day with my daughters and granddaughters!! I am looking forward to it and will enjoy it.

Wat een griep leek, was een longontsteking. Ik ga altijd te laat naar de dokter, maar toen een vriending van me vertelde, dat enkele van haar vrienden na een griep ziek bleven en longontsteking bleken te hebben, ben ik toch maar gegaan. Ik kreeg medicijnen en nu ben ik aan het opknappen. Wat kan hoesten pijn doen!! Nooit geweten. Toch is het heerlijk om in bed te liggen als je je zo beroerd voelt. Mijn dochters en man waren schatten voor me en ik ben al bijna opgeknapt.
Morgen ben ik samen met mijn dochters en hun dochters. Ik kijk er naar uit. Na zo ziek geweest te zijn, kan ik zo genieten van de gewone dingen.

Easy! Kate loves to eat and she likes everything.

It is impossible for me to do nothing. My sewing machine was on the table and I find moments to sew a little. No piecing or free motion quilting, just binding the pile with sketchbook pages.  No thinking while sewing, just routine stitching. Yesterday, on my husbands birthday, we had a quiet day with no visitors. I enjoyed some free motion quilting and finished two Matisse mini's. I planned to use black for the quilting, but multicolored yellow seems a better choice. I think it is a good choice. I used the shapes of the applique for the free motion quilting pattern. It is fun to embroider Matisse signature!

Ook als ik ziek ben, moet ik af en toe wat om handen hebben. De naaimachine stond heel de week op tafel. Geen ingewikkeld naaien, maar af en toe heb ik wat schetsboek pagina's afgebiesd. Gisteren was mijn man jarig, maar het bezoek komt over enkele weken. Ik heb voor het eerst weer wat genaaid. Ik wilde de Matisse mini's met zwart quilten, maar heb gelukkig multicolor geel gebruikt. Ik
denk dat het een goede keuze was. Ik heb de vormen van de applicaties in het quiltpatroon terug laten komen.

Het is leuk om Matisse handtekening te borduren.

Inspired by Matisse and Kate

Last week, as usual,  I was  a day with my youngest granddaughter, Kate, who happened to live in Amsterdam too. She was ill (a flue)  and coughed badly. Every time she coughed, she starts crying. Now it is my turn to have a flue. I get a vacination, but the 'American flue' which is in The Netherlands now, was an unexpected virus, so no protection against that one. Now I understand why Kate was crying, coughing is so painfull! But, just like Kate, I need to slow down, sleep a lot and wait a week to feel better. When I am tired of doing nothing. my husband takes good care of everything, I sew a little bit, when I am tired of doing nothing.

Ik heb, zoals elke week, vorige week op mijn kleindochter gepast. Ze had griep en hoestte lelijk. Als ze hoestte ging ze hard huilen. Zo sneu. Ze lacht en speelt altijd, maar was nu zo lusteloos. Ze leek weer beter, maar nu is het mijn beurt. Ik ben wel ingeënt, maar de Amerikaanse griep die nu heerst, was niet verwacht en de inenting bood dus geen bescherming. Ik snap nu waarom Kate zo huilde. Het hoesten is zo pijnlijk!! Maar net als Kate moet ik kalm aan doen en veel slapen en dan voel ik me volgende week een stuk beter. Als ik gaar ben van het niets doen, ga ik wat naaien. Genoeg dingen te doen, waarbij ik niet hoef na te denken.

I do not lay in my bed all day. I am looking for Matisse information on the Internet. I am so interested in his cut outs and still need to go to the Matisse exhibition in Amsterdam this summer. I find a lot of information about Matisse: pictures, videos, interviews and animations on these two fabulous websites:  Matisse colored the paper sheets himself with paint before using them for his cut outs. He used the left over pieces too. The colors of his cut outs changes due to the quality of the paint.

Ik lig niet de hele dag in bed. I zoek naar informatie over Matisse op het Internet. Ik ben zeer geinteresseerd in zijn werk en moet nog steeds naar de tentoonstelling deze zomer. Ik vond een schat aan informatie (plaatjes, videos, intrviews met Matisse, animaties van zijn werkwijze) over Matisse op twee websites: , Tekenen met een schaar van het Tate Modern en deze interactieve tentoonstelling van Moma org. Matisse kleurde zelf zijn papier eerst met verf en gebruikte ook vaak de papierrestjes. De kleuren die we nu zien op zijn werk, zijn niet meer de kleuren die Matisse zag. Niet alle verf die hij gebruikte was kwalitatief zo goed en kleuren vervagen.

I made two Matisse blocks and a another Matisse mini this week. All rough edge applique. When I look to the blocks, I understand why Matisse is a master and I just somone using his technique.
I runned out of thread to quilt the blocks. So I ordered big cones by mail. It was here after 20 hours! Almost quicker than driving to the shop by myself. I quilted the minis with a pattern  called 'Matisse meandering'. I used the thread to quilt my two minis with this pattern. I binded thse mini's and because after more than three years approving my binding routines I binded most of my sketchbook pages too. Still four to go!

Ik heb Matisse blokken en nog een Matisse mini quiltje gemaakt. Als ik er zo naar kijk, snap ik waarom Matisse een meester is en ik zomaar iemand die zijn techniek uitprobeert. Ik blijf de neiging hebben om de lapjes te verschuiven.
Mijn zwarte en witte garen dat ik gebruik om te quilten was op, Maar het werd binnen een dag geleverd door de firma Matson uit Utecht. Wat een service! Bijna sneller dan zelf op en neer rijden naar Utrecht, Ik heb het garen gebruikt om de mini te quilten met een patroon dat ik 'Matisse meanderen' noem. Ik heb de mini's afgebiesd en meteen maar een stapeltje sketchbook quiltjes ook. Na drie jaar al die quilts en placeats afbiezen, draai ik daar eigenlijk mijn hand niet meer voor om.

After cold weeks we have better, sunny wheather here. So I will dye cotton on our terrace for more Matisse blocks and may be a quilt as soon I feel better.

Het is eindelijk mooi weer, dan kan ik als ik helemaal ben opgeknapt buiten op het terras buiten katoen verven voor wat Matisse blokken en misschien zelfs een quilt. Maar dan moet ik me wel beter voelen.
